    SNP Westminster leader Angus Robertson raised the case of a seven-year-old and his family from Dingwall, whose family face deportation, at Wednesday's PMQs.

    Chancellor George Osborne said the family "don't meet the immigration criteria", and said the home secretary would write to Mr Robertson about the matter.

    But Mr Robertson said the case had been front-page news in Scotland, and told the chancellor about his reply: "This has been going on for weeks and that frankly is not good enough".

    The Brain family, who have been living in Scotland since 2011, must leave the UK and return to Australia in five days' time if they cannot meet visa criteria.

    The Australian couple's deportation is a human rights issue because their seven-year-old son's first language is Gaelic, SNP MP Ian Blackford has said.

    Labour MSP Anas Sarwar makes his maiden speech, but was of course an old hand at Westminster until the 2015 general election.

    Mr Sarwar says in coming to Holyrood he is following in the big footsteps of  Donald Dewar, Sam Galbraith, Alex Salmond and Winnie Ewing, to name but a few.

    He says Jackson Carlaw has described him as one of the "old and tired faces of the Labour party", but goes on to say that at 33 years old he actually one of the youngest veteran in politics.

    Mr Sarwar says where areas of common interest can be found, great things can be achieved, citing the smoking ban.

    Scottish Conservative MSP Douglas Ross uses his maiden speech to focus on justice.

    Mr Ross says morale in the police is at an all time low and he says something has gone wrong when officer have to focus on targets.

    The Tory MSP says it is clear if we want the police to be safeguarding us we have to safeguard our police force.

    New SNP MSP Fulton MacGregor pays tribute to Labour's Elaine Smith, his predecessor as the representative of Coatbridge & Chryston constituency.

    Mr MacGregor says his time as a social worker and a local councillor has, he says, given him a unique insight into his constituency.

    He welcomes the government's commitment to build 50,000 affordable homes over the next five years.

    Scottish Liberal Democrat Mike Rumbles rises to give his first speech of this term after an absence of about five years.

    Mr Rumbles says it is great to be back but he believes things have not changed much because the SNP are still "full of rhetoric" with little detail.

    The Lib Dem MSP says only time will tell as to whether the SNP can back any of it up.

    He says the Scottish government are determined to control everything locally.

    Mr Rumbles says the new promises on climate change targets only came about because the First Minister did not meet her last targets.

    New SNP MSP Ben Macpherson for Edinburgh Northern and Leith begins by paying warm tribute to his Labour predecessor Malcolm Chisholm, which receives warm applause.

    Mr Macpherson says: "We can build a fairer society and also a stronger more equal economy."

    The SNP MSP uses his maiden speech to call for the creation of a more just nation.

    He says he welcomes the Scottish government's priorities and its intent to use all the parliament's powers to make a difference.

    The SNP MSP, not surprisingly then goes on to call for full powers for Scotland.

    The Labour MSP has taken over her party's role as justice spokesperson.

    SNP MSP Ash Denholm giving her maiden speech says, thanks to widening access, young people can access university no matter what area or conditions they live in.

    The member for Edinburgh East says a student in England will rack up a huge amount of debt with tuition fees and students in Scotland will not.

    Ms Denholm says student fees are a tax and that it is a "travesty".

    The SNP MSP says it makes more sense to invest money in the future of people. 

    She says she supports progressive policies and that the government will move Scotland forward.

    Giving his maiden speech, SNP MSP Ivan McKee says Scotland is making good progress under this government.

    Scotland's new education secretary has pledged to reduce teacher workload as part of the government's drive to reduce the attainment gap between schools. 

    John Swinney said improving attainment across the country would be the "driving purpose" of his tenure.

    He has asked the chief inspector of education to write to schools with guidance about qualifications and assessment in a bid to cut out unnecessary work for teachers. 

    The deputy first minister has also pledged to meet with Janet Brown, the Chief Examiner in Scotland, every month to help improve conditions in schools.
