    SNP MSP Stewart Stevenson says Scots are people of international interest.

    Mr Stevenson says those in the fishing industry are will overwhelmingly vote "no" but there is progress being made in this area. 

    Mr Stevenson says reform is needed and is coming but that the UK should take a more active role in promoting our fishing interests.

    Labour MSP Elaine Smith says the wider EU debate has been dominated by the right with racist undertones.

    Ms Smith says it is important that a socialist leave perspective is given.

    She says she is not convinced the best way is remaining part of an "undemocratic superstate".

    The Labour MSP says there is an "unelected bureaucracy at its core".

    She says most workers rights do not come from the EU, but arise from struggle of unions here.

    Ms Smith says there have been endless pro-business directives from Brussels with a direct impact on Scotland.

    Conservative MSP John Scott begins by saying he is very much in the Remain camp in the debate on Europe.

    Mr Scott, a farmer, says the total being greater than the sum of its parts is why Scotland should remain in the UK and the UK should remain in the EU.

    He says there are problems to be solved, but not to be given up on.

    He says the EU favours smaller nations unlike the UK and the EU has proven to be fairer to workers than the UK.

    Ms Beamish says CAP payments for farmers are important and we must check if these payments would still be made if we are not in the EU.

  8. New Tory MSP Graham Simpson backs Brexitpublished at 11:40 British Summer Time 26 May 2016

    New Conservative MSP Graham Simpson says he fears he will be outnumbered in today's debate, as he backs Leave.

    Mr Simpson, making his maiden spech, says if asked to stay in the Common Market he would say, but that is not what is on offer now nor was it on offer in 1975.

    He says this must be a once in a generational vote just as the "Scottish referendum should have been a once in a generation vote".

    The Tory MSP says SNP parliamentarians are not allowed to back Brexit but he says there have been newspaper reports there  is at least one of them who backs leaving.

    Mr Simpson says it boils down to whether people want decision affecting Scotland being taken from outside these borders.

    Labour MSP Mary Fee highlights the benefits of remaining in the EU, particularly in terms of equality.

    The former Equal Opportunities Committee convener warns of the dangers of Brexit, particularly for women.

    Ms Fee says it is vital to remain in the EU as the ECHR protects everyone's human rights.

    The Lib Dem MSP for Edinburgh Western says it is down to the success of the EU that he is only the second generation in his family that has not had to contemplate going to war.

    He hopes for the same for his three children.

    Scottish Conservative MSP Margaret Mitchell says many people could not care less about this referendum or about the issues at stake.

    Ms Mitchell, who backs leaving, says she is not an official member of any leave campaign.

    She says her reasons for wishing to leave include the economy, with Europe not growing economically.

    The Tory MSP points to the red tape from the EU, saying it is a failing and outdated institution.

    Ms Mitchell says the key argument for leaving centres around the free movement of people which means we cannot currently choose those with the skills they need.

    She says this has the potential to put unsustainable pressure on our school, housing and public services.

    SNP MSP Mike Russell says the SNP is now making a positive case for Europe, expressing its desire to be an independent member and refusing to be dragged out against its will.

    Mr Russell says he finds it astonishing anyone would argue to remove the European Convention of Human Rights, considering its genesis.

    The former education secretary says isolationism will never lead to finding ways to do better across Europe.

    Mr Russell says to choose to remain is to choose the positive.

    Millions entitled to a vote in the EU referendum could miss out because they are not on the electoral register, campaigners have warned.

    Would-be referendum voters have until midnight on Tuesday 7 June to sign up to the electoral register.

    Fgures suggest many people will leave it too late to register and will be turned away at polling stations.
