    One in five of the non UK-born population in Scotland is Polish, new figures have shown.

    The UK Office for National Statistics report, external estimated about 86,000 Poles were living in Scotland in 2015.

    The next most common nationalities in Scotland were India and the Irish Republic, both with 16,000. Poland was also the top country of birth for migrants living in the UK.

    In total, an estimated 393,000 people in Scotland were born outside the UK.

    This was an increase of about 12,000 over the previous year - 7.4% of the overall population.

    A total of 203,000 of those non UK-born residents were born outside the European Union (EU) (51.7%).

    Mr Kerr says he supports the work the Scottish government has done for migrants. 

    He says the UK government has provided more funding for refugees than any other western European government. 

    He says he cannot believe anyone in the Parliament thinks the UK government shouldn't have some sort of border control.

    Mr Kerr uses his amendemnt to call on the UK government to guarantee the rights of fellow EU nationals to live and work here and urges EU countries to offer reciprocal assurances for UK nationals living and working in the EU. 

    The Conservative MSP says non-EU migration is essential and that a future, fairer immigration system can provide equal opportunities to live and work for migrants from outwith the EU. 

    Mr Kerr highlights the importance of attracting migrants from elsewhere in the UK, and believes that the Scottish government has significant powers to create incentives to live and work in Scotland.

    Mr Allan says the language being used on immigration and the UK governments "refusal to guarantee their place" means that some are questioning whether they want to remain part of the UK.

    The minister says migrants are "welcome here and this is your home."

    European nationals in the UK and British citizens living in the EU must have a guarantee they can remain in place after Brexit, campaigners say.

    The Three Million group is demanding assurances people will not be used as "bargaining chips".

    Meanwhile, the think tank British Future wants a "fair" cut-off date for any settlement and citizenship changes.

    The government says it wants to let the 2.8 million EU nationals stay in the UK, but member states must reciprocate.

    The Three Million group delivered a letter to Downing Street on Monday, alongside 10 groups representing the 1.2 million UK citizens living in the EU.

    It wants EU citizens living in the UK to be given permanent residence before Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty - getting Brexit negotiations with the EU under way - is triggered, which the government says will happen by the end of March.

    Mr Allan says he wants to thank all the refugees and migrants who have contributed so much to Scotland.

    The minister says he is concerned that, post the Brexit referendum, people feel they make offensive comments.

    He says recent non-UK migrants are more likely to be in work than others in Scotland.

    Green MSP Ross Greer says the main culprits are right wing newspapers like the Sun and we should distance ourselves from theses tabloids.

    Mr Allan says it is our responsibility to stand up to false claims about migration.
