Nicola Sturgeon has said she will need time to reflect on the result of the general election and what it might mean for a second independence referendum.
Speaking at the count in Glasgow, she said: "This is our second best ever result in a Westminster election. We have won the election and I congratulate all the MPs who have been elected."
Asked what the results meant in terms of a mandate for a second independence referendum, she said: "It's almost four o'clock in the morning. Like most politicians I've had no sleep. I'm not going to take any rash decisions.
"Clearly I have to reflect on the result of the election and I will take time to do that. but I think it would be the wrong thing to do at this hour, to take decisions before having the opportunity to properly think about it."

Theresa May's party are set to win the most seats. And she looks as if she has swallowed a wasp.
Nicola Sturgeon's party are set to win the most seats in Scotland. And she sounds cautious and constrained.
Isn't politics remarkable? It is, as ever, a question of momentum and relativity.
Christine Jardine has taken Edinburgh West for the Lib Dems, with a majority of 2,988. It is the Lib Dems third seat in Scotland.
Pete Wishart, who won Perth and Perthshire North with a majority of just 21, told BBC Scotland: "You don't get nights that are more nerve-jangling than that. That was two recounts and a majority of 21 - but I'll take that.
"I'll personally go out and see if I can find those 21 souls and thank them personally. I'm just really, really pleased, on a tough night for the SNP."

If Nicola Sturgeon sounds faintly disappointed, Theresa May looked crushed.
Her acceptance speech was downbeat.
She urged unity - without suggesting she was able to offer it - then left the stage swiftly.
Speculation will increase that she is not likely to be long in office.

Alex Salmond is laying emphasis upon the prospect that the SNP will win the election in Scotland.
Not upon the seats lost.
He says Labour experienced a late surge on the basis of support for Jeremy Corbyn.
He also says the SNP will be even more influential in what might be a hung parliament.
The SNP have held Linlithgow with a majority of 2,919
Labour has won the seat of Coatbridge, Chryston and Bellshill from the SNP. Hugh Gaffney won with a majority of 1,586 over the SNP's Phil Boswell.
