Alex Salmond and Angus Robertson were among the high-profile casualties as the SNP lost more than a third of its seats in the general election.

The party won 35 of the 59 Scottish constituencies - a fall of 21 seats from the 56 they won in 2015.

The Conservatives secured 13 seats in Scotland - the party's best performance in the country since 1983.

Labour won seven seats and the Lib Dems four. The three pro-UK parties had won just one seat each in 2015.

The Tories saw big increases in their vote across the country, with the SNP vote dropping sharply.

Lord Buckethead wasn't the only odd person the PM shared a stage with. Bobby "Elmo" Smith, pictured above, got three votes.

Mrs May had an unusual opponent in her constituency of Maidenhead Lord Buckethead, who won 249 votes.

It's not the first time he's tried to be an MP.

In 1987, Lord Buckethead stood against Margaret Thatcher in Finchley, winning 131 votes. And in 1992, he stood against then prime minister John Major.

    Quote Message

Theresa May promised on seven occasions that she would not call a snap election and then called a snap election unnecessarily. She said the election would be about Brexit and we received no detailed plan from her about what would be the future of our country's relationship with Europe.

  12. 'Political gamble gone badly wrong'published at 09:04 British Summer Time 9 June 2017

    Dowing SreetImage source, bbc

Theresa May is "holed up inside" Number 10, working out how to do a deal with the DUP to form a government, BBC political editor Laura Kuenssberg says, "her political gamble having gone so badly wrong".

Laura has been talking to senior Conservatives:

    Quote Message

They are talking about imagining the alternative - imagine if the Conservative party ends up with a leadership challenge.

If this was to happen, a new leader could well call another general election to get a mandate - and this is something none of the Conservative party want.

There is a bit of a sense of Tories rallying around.

But the DUP leader has suggested it may be very difficult for May to survive as PM, adds Laura.

The situation is very fluid, she concludes.

    BBC Radio Scotland

Speaking on GMS, Tory MSP Maurice Golden

Speaking on GMS, Tory MSP Maurice Golden said the rationale behind calling an election was sound.

Mr Golden said the Conservatives lost a small number of "critical" seats and that the party must look to form a "strong and stable" government which looks likely to be with the DUP.

The Tory MSP said Theresa May is still the best option for the United Kingdom versus "the chaotic" Jeremy Corbyn.

    Quote Message

"We will take time and care to reflect on the outcome of this result. But we have to acknowledge that the question of a second independence was a significant motivator of votes against the SNP in this election, and we have to be attentive to that point."

    John Swinney, Deputy First Minister
