    She says retaining the bursary and support for student nurses and midwives will help this.

    2,600 extra places for training nurses and midwives have also been created, she adds.

    Last September Scotland's health secretary said she wants things to be better for nurses "as soon as possible".

    Shona Robison was responding to a UK-wide survey by the Royal College of Nursing which found widespread concern over staffing levels.

    More than half of the nurses questioned said they did not have enough time to give the level of care they would like.

    The RCN wants a review of whether there is enough nursing staff to provide safe care to patients.

    The performance of Scotland's A&E units in the first week of the year deteriorated, despite recording a record low at the end of 2017.

    The latest weekly figures showed 77.9% of patients were dealt with within the four-hour target time.

    The figure was even lower than the previous week which was the worst since weekly recording began three years ago.

    Ms Martin says her neice is an under 19 Scottish sevens international.

    However, she highlights a debate at Westminster yesterday in which UK ministers said they would not support the creation of such spaces.

    Ms Campbell urges the UK government to rethink this, arguing there is a public health need for it.

    The Scottish government is to seek devolution of drugs laws to allow users to take heroin safely under medical supervision.

    A "fix room" was planned for Glasgow because of an increase in street injecting in the city, and a rise in HIV infections among users.

    Scottish ministers said the idea was "ambitious and innovative."

    But the Home Office, which controls drug legislation, said it was illegal, and expected police to enforce the law.

    The safer drug consumption facility (SDCF) was planned for Glasgow where an estimated 400-500 drug addicts are injecting on the streets.

    Scotland's health secretary has described thedecision to close a hospital children's wardas one of the most difficult she has had to make.

    Shona Robison confirmed on Friday that child in-patient and day care services at the Royal Alexandra Hospital in Paisley would move to Glasgow.

    She told the Scottish Parliament on Tuesday that there was "overwhelming clinical support" for the move.

    But opposition parties said the closure broke an SNP election pledge.

    Scottish Conservative health spokesman Miles Briggs said the first minister had told voters there were no plans to close the ward in May 2016, just before the Holyrood elections.

    But he said ministers were now "breaking a key election pledge made to families across the west of Scotland".

    SNP MSP Fulton Macgregor says a recent Royal College report shows Scotland ahead on paediatric issues.

    The Scottish government has been praised for progress made on children's health over the last year.

    But the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health (RCPCH) said urgent action was still needed to improve the review system for child deaths.

    The RCPCH issued a series of recommendations to improve child health, externalacross the UK 12 months ago.

    In a scorecard on nations' progress, it said Scotland and Wales were performing better than England.

    The RCPCH singled out Scottish policies designed to cut child poverty and boost health visitor numbers.

    In December we reported that a children's unit at a West Lothian hospital will be closed due to a shortage of doctors.

    The children's short stay assessment unit at St John's Hospital in Livingston closure followed ongoing staffing and recruitment issues which mean there are not enough doctors available to cover overnight and weekends.

    NHS Lothian advised parents to call NHS 24. It said children could still be assessed in the emergency department.

    The health board said a paediatric consultant would be available on-call at all hours.

    Health Secretary Shona Robison points to NHS funding which supports a range of services for children.

    Mr Findlay says 144 sick and seriously ill children have been transferred to Royal Hospital for Children, many of whom were admitted due to local ward closures.

    When will St John's Hopsital's paediatrics ward be fully operational as a 24 hour service, he asks.

    Ms Robison says efforts are being made to ensure it is operating as soon as possible.

    She highlights staff being recruited to St John's and the Royal Hospital for Children.
