    The two sides in the university pensions dispute have agreed to mediation by the conciliation service Acas - but the strikes will continue.

    Staff at 61 universities have walked out over planned cuts to their pensions, with a further three due to join the action next week.

    The University and College Union said it had tabled a set of proposals which it believed could resolve the dispute.

    The employers, Universities UK, called Tuesday's talks "positive".

    MSPs propose plan based on Finnish scheme to tackle homelessness

    More should be done to find permanent accommodation for the homeless, a Holyrood committee has said.

    The MSPs said Scotland should adopt a "housing first" scheme, similar to a strategy used successfully in Finland.

    The Local Government and Communities Committee said the plan, which has been piloted in parts of Scotland, should go nationwide.

    The housing minister has welcomed the committee's report and said he will consider it carefully.

    Homeless people are being urged to seek shelter as temperatures are set to drop to -5C as bitterly cold weather from Siberia sweeps across the country.

    The Met Office has issued a yellow "be aware" warning for snow on Tuesday covering every county.

    Councils expressed confidence in their grit stocks, with freezing weather and further snow forecast for later in the week.

    Richard Edwards, of homeless charity Huggard Centre in Cardiff, said those living on the streets should seek help from homeless services.

    Scottish Labour leader Richard Leonard praises those working both night and day to get the country moving again.

    Mr Leonard says a man who was sleeping rough just a mile from Holyrood died from the cold last Thursday.

    It is clear there needs to be action on rough sleeping and calls for an update on the homeless an rough sleeping action group.

    Ms Sturgeon says as long as one single person is homeless or rough sleeping there is work to do.

    She says the action group is looking at longer term issues, having looked at the short term problems of winter rough sleeping.

    The first minister points to the £50 funding to tackle homelessness.

    The Scottish government has committed to a publicly owned national investment bank.

    Speaking on Wednesday at the launch of the implementation plan the first minister said the “truly transformative” measure would be operational by 2020.
