    Sajid Javid has promised to "do whatever it takes" to put right problems faced by the Windrush generation after he succeeded Amber Rudd as home secretary.

    Mr Javid said as a second generation migrant he was "angry" at the treatment of those caught up in the saga.

    He also disowned the "hostile environment" tag attached to the government's migration policy.

    Mr Javid was appointed after Ms Rudd quit on Sunday evening, saying she "inadvertently" misled MPs over immigration removal targets.

    The Scotsman yesterday reported: "The Scottish Government is facing "extremely serious questions" over the safety of its flagship Baby Boxes after safety concerns were raised by a leading cot death expert.

    "Peter Blair, a specialist in medical statistics with the University of Bristol medical school, says babies should not be sleeping in the boxes unless it is a an emergency or rare occasion.

    "He warns Scottish ministers, in a memo seen by the Guardian, that the high-sided nature of the boxes mean parents must be directly above them to ensure their child is safe."

    Tory MSP Miles Briggs says a leading expert on cot deaths claims there are significant safety concerns about the baby box scheme.

    Mr Briggs says he has learned these concerns were first were raised early last year and calls for all advice from experts on the baby box to be published.

    The first minister hits back saying the Tories should be "deeply ashamed of themselves for needlessly trying to frighten parents".

    She asks why Mr Brigg's is trying to deliberately mislead on this.

    Ms Sturgeon iniststs the baby box conforms to all relelvant safety standards.

    Back in Ferbruary, the teaching union EIS claimed a proposed new supervisory body for the profession may not be independent of government.

    The Scottish government is considering incorporating the General Teaching Council for Scotland (GTCS) into a new body with additional responsibilities.

    The independent GTCS itself has expressed fears this will be costly, legally complex and achieve little.

    The Scottish government said it would consider all responses on the issue.

    Scottish Green co-convener Patrick Harvie says teachers must be supported in doing their jobs and the attainment gap must be tackled.

    The Green MSP says the Scottish government's planned education reforms do not have the support of teachers, parents or parliament.

    Is it not time for a change of direction by providing teachers with the resources they need, he asks.

    The first minister defends the regional collaboratives, saying they are designed to give support for attainment to improve.

    The reforms place parents and teachers at the heart of improvements, she argues.

    Ms Sturgeon also argues more funding is being funneled to schools via an increase to council budgets and the pupil equity fund.

    Confidence in justice system is 'shattered' says sister of dead man

    The sister of a man who died after being restrained by police three years ago said her "patience has been exhausted".

    Kadi Johnson was speaking at a press conference where Sheku Bayoh's family launched a civil action against Police Scotland for £1.85m.

    Mr Bayoh, 31, lost consciousness after being restrained by officers in Kirkcaldy, Fife, in May 2015.

    She said police investigations review commissioner Kate Frame should resign.

    Labour MSP Claire Baker says today is the third anniversary of the death of Sheku Bayoh in police custody.

    Ms Baker calls for an inquiry into deaths in custody in Scotland.

    Ms Sturgeon says her thoughts and the thoughts of everybody in the chamber are with the family and friends of Mr Bayoh on this day.

    She says the Crown Office has indicated that a decision on any prosecutions will be made as soon as possible.

    Electricity output from the Hunterston B nuclear power station could fall by 40% this year after dozens of cracks were discovered in one of the reactors.

    The North Ayrshire power plant's director Colin Weir said it would be necessary to reduce generation.

    But he insisted that Hunterston B, which is scheduled to be in operation until 2023, was still safe.

    The company running the plant, EDF Energy, expects the damaged reactor to return to service by the end of 2018.

    The first minister says the Mental Welfare Commission has carried out an inspection and NHS Tayside is expected to respond to these recommendations.

    We will continue to monitor changes made by the health board, she says, and there will also be local investment in preventative care in Tayside.

    The five-year rolling average shows suicide is on a downward trend in Scotland and it is our responsibility to ensure further action to reduce it goes forward, she states.

    The Evening Telegraph reported on the suicide of David Ramsay earlier this year: "The family of a Dundee man who took his own life are set to meet NHS bosses to demand answers over his death as they push for a fatal accident inquiry into the tragedy.

    "David Ramsay was found dead at the city’s Templeton Woods on October 9 2016.

    "His father David Ramsay Snr and niece Gillian Murray were due to sit down with NHS Tayside’s medical director Dr Andrew Russell to discuss the circumstances leading up to the 50-year-old’s death.

    "Speaking on behalf of the family, Gillian said: “This meeting will be an opportunity for the NHS medical director to apologise to us directly, as well as allow them the chance to attempt to answer the family’s questions before all of the information is sent to the Crown.”"
