First Minister Nicola Sturgeon pledged an extra £250m for mental health services as she announced her plans for the coming year at Holyrood.

Ms Sturgeon set out details of 12 new bills in her "programme for government" as MSPs returned from summer recess.

Mental health support for young people and increased capital investment were among the key measures announced.

Opposition parties said the government was being too timid, and had failed to follow through on previous promises.

Willie Rennie's riposte to Nicola Sturgeon's speech prompted an outbreak of body language on the front bench.

Culture Secretary Fiona Hyslop praises the coming together of various sports for the European Championships.

She highlights the only entirely new venue was the BMX centre in Glasgow and it is one of the few in the world that meets competition standards, meaning more BMXers should come to the city.

With up to 12 hours a day of sport on TV, Scotland was showcased to the world Ms Hyslop adds.

She states the programme was not just about sport but also promoting Scottish culture.

Labour MSP James Kelly praises all the people who volunteered during the Championships, as well as the athletes.

The platform provided by the European Championships to promote physical activity is one we can all united around, he concludes.

The Scottish Parliament will be the first UK legislature to host the long-running political programme.

Tory MSP Brian Whittle, known as "one shoe Whittle" or "the quickest sock in history", welcomes the bringing of a lot of sports together as the European Championships did.

He admits having a soft spot for the European Athletic Championships.

Mr Whittle ran the 3rd leg of the 4x400m relay final in Stuttgart in 1986 with only one shoe, winning gold as part of team GB.

Mr Whittle says we can say we are world class at hosting sporting events.

SNP MSP Bill Kidd praises Scottish athletes who contributed towards Team GB placing second overall at the European Championships.

International sporting events build a legacy for Scotland, inspiring us and pushing us to go further says Mr Kidd.

We are blessed with a natural landscape which offers many opportunities for physical activity, he states.

The SNP MSP also highlights facilities in urban areas in Scotland, such as the BMX centre in Glasgow.

"Get inspired, get involved, try a new sport," Mr Kidd concludes.

Tory MSP Maurice Golden says he and Mr Lochhead sold over one million compost bins to households throughout Scotland.

The Tory MSP points out there is picture of both of them in compost bins, but he is not sure who would be worst hit by publishing it on social media.

Mr Golden points out Mr Lochhead was named joint fourth hardest working MSP by our colleague Phillip Sim, and wishes him well.

MSPs agree that the first minister can seek the approval of the appointment of Mr Lochhead as a minister from the Queen.

Richard Lochhead is to return to a Scottish government after more than two years away from the front benches.

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon said Mr Lochhead will be her new minister for further education, higher education and science.

The role was initially to have been filled by Gillian Martin.

Ms Martin's nomination was dropped by Ms Sturgeon in June amid a row over "inappropriate" language in a blog.
