Deputy First Minister John Swinney joined opposition party leaders in paying a warm tribute to all who took part in the D-day landing.
Mr Swinney was standing in for Nicola Sturgeon who was in France to mark the 75th anniversary of D-day.
He said: "The first minister is honouring those who fought fascism, defended democracy and gave their lives for our freedom.
"When we look around our world today we must all remember the debt we own the D-Day generation, and now as then we must stand together against those who would choose the road of fascism in our society."
The first minister attended a memorial service at the cathedral in Bayeux.
It was the first city in France to be liberated by the invasion.
