Health Secretary Jeanne Freeman is seeking to bring a specialist surgeon from the US to help people with problems caused by vaginal mesh implants.

Dr Dionysios K. Veronikis, an obstetrician-gynaecologist based in Missouri, USA, had offered to come to Scotland and operate on women who have suffered severe pain since the implants.

Ms Freeman has also announced a new complex case unit will be established in NHS Scotland to ensure women who have experienced complications from mesh procedures receive the best care and treatment.

The use of mesh in Scotland was suspended in all but "exceptional circumstances" in 2014 after it emerged some women had suffered painful side-effects but the procedure has still been used hundreds of times since.

  6. The last division on Planning Bill amendments?published at 14:37 British Summer Time 20 June 2019

Tory MSP Alexander Stewart explains his amendment is to ensure no duplication of charges.

The minister offers his support to all the amendments in the group, adding one of his own is to reduce a sunset clause on the infrastructure levy from ten years to seven years.

Summing up, Ms Beamish highlights the Planning Bill has been a "tough gig for everybody" and adds: "Well done all."

But we are not away scot-free just yet - an amendment debated earlier in the week has gone to a vote, meaning a five minute suspension as MSPs are called to the chamber.

Ms Beamish pivots to amendments relating to the infrastructure levy amendments, the final group for the Planning Bill.

The Labour MSP says she has brief notes on this, which is welcomed with a "hurray".

    "Indeed hurray," agrees Ms Beamish.

Her amendment will insert "green and blue infrastructure" into the bill.

“Green and blue infrastructure” means features of the natural and built environments (including water) that provide a range of ecosystem and social benefits, explains Ms Beamish and she calls for MSPs to back her amendments.

Local Government and Communities Minister Kevin Stewart says the government agrees there is a need to phase out the use of peat to help achieve Scotland's climate change targets.

The minister says although he cannot support Claudia Beamish's amendments the government recognises the issues she raises.

Ms Beamish can be assured that when the National Planning Framework is looked at he will look again at these issues, adds Mr Stewart.

The Labour MSP makes a "very difficult decision" not to move these amendments today, but warns there is a serious issue with aftercare for carbon sequestration.

    Labour MSP Claudia Beamish

One of her amendments seek to end the use of peat in horticulture and she looks to the minister for further information.

Ms Beamish also asks whether the government will update and consult on advice on aftercare of land.

Community Safety Minister Kate Forbes welcomes the cross-party consensus in this debate and in the motion from Pauline McNeill.

Ms Forbe says her sister was a resident on Sauchiehall Street one minute away from the GSA fire..

The community safety minister says the cabinet secretary has said she will wait for the outcome of the SFRS investigation before deciding on the need for a public inquiry.

She agrees the fire caused acute difficulties for residents and businesses and the response afterwards was not as good as it could have been.

That's why the Scottish government had to get involved says Ms Forbes and she adds "we will absolutely not abandon Sauchiehall Street."

The Labour MSP tells the chamber residents and businesses say they felt abandoned, as it took five weeks before anyone from Glasgow City Council came to speak to them.
