    The two teams will meet in Friday's European Challenge Cup final, with Edinburgh hoping to become the first Scottish side to win a European trophy.

    "It was the right decision to move away," said 29-year-old Laidlaw.

    "I've really enjoyed it and feel I've played a lot of good rugby this year. I'll need to do that again on Friday."

    Police want to trace a man seen carrying a large television through Ecclefechan early yesterday morning.

    The man was seen on Langlands Road at 05:20, following a break-in to a house when a television and sound system, worth £4,000, were stolen.

    A Police Scotland spokesman urged people to report suspicious behaviour at the time, giving officers the opportunity to check the incident out as it happens.

    He added: "Calls made which turn out to be a false alarm are never frowned upon and we would rather check them out at the time as opposed to making a protracted enquiry at a later time, when the result will be the same."

    The man was wearing dark trousers and a dark hooded top with the hood up.

    Materials found on the site - including 2,000 large boulders - have been used to create the work.

    It hopes to attract international visitors and boost businesses in nearby Sanquhar, Kelloholm and Kirkconnel.

    A woman is to stand trial accused of assaulting a toddler at a retail park in Falkirk.

    Jodie Mitchell is accused of dragging the two-year-old girl along the ground at the Central Retail Park on 6 February, as well as seizing her by the head, lifting her from the ground and shaking her by the body.

    The 26-year-old, of Selkirk, failed to appear at Falkirk Sheriff Court.

    Her solicitor said she was "unwell", and entered a not guilty plea.

    Newton Stewart lifted the Haig Gordon Cup last night, after beating league champions Wigtown 2-1 in the final which was played at Creetown.

    Ryan McKie put Newton ahead in the 40th minute of the game played at Castle Cary Park, Creetown, on a bitterly cold windy night.

    His angular shot beat the Wigtown keeper but the lead was short-lived for a minute later it was 1-1 when Harry Fiddler palmed the ball out and Rab Jamieson prodded it over the line for the equaliser.

    The winner came in the 63rd minute when McKie turned provider when his free kick was picked up by Jason Gallagher who forced the ball home from close in.

    Two teachers from Dumfries and Galloway who lost their jobs after being caught in a pub with cocaine are set to be struck off.

    A hearing has been scheduled to remove them from the professional register.

    Mark Turner and Lesley Wilson were caught with the class A drug in a bar in Carlisle in June last year.

    Mr Turner was the head teacher at Dumfries High School at the time, while Ms Wilson was deputy head at Wallacehall Academy in Thornhill.

    There are progressive works taking place on the A75 between Stranraer and Dunragit and there's also temporary lights in place for repairs to the Cree Bridge at Newton Stewart.

    On the M74 there are north and southbound lane restrictions for works between junction 15 Beattock and 16 Johnstonbridge.

    Stop - Go boards will be out today on the A701 Dumfries to Moffat Road at the Shieldhill junction.

    And on the A76, Dumfries to Kilmarnock Road traffic controls remain in place at Enterkinfoot. Temporary lights will also be in use at Elliock Bridge just south of Sanquhar.

    In the Borders, it will be another day of sunshine and showers. It'll be a grey start with a good many showers during the morning, but most of them will clear, leaving some sunshine for the afternoon.

    Winds will be fresh at first, easing through the day. Temperatures will reach 12 Celsius.

    It will be similar picture in the south-west, but an improvement on yesterday, with a shift in the balance towards dry and bright weather. Showers will be mainly towards Dumfries and Moffat, but they'll be few and far between.
