  3. School catchment callpublished at 13:19 British Summer Time 1 September 2015

    Debbie Muir
    BBC Scotland, Dumfries

Parents of children who won an appeal to have their children allowed to go to Castle Douglas Primary School have called for the catchment area to be changed.

A row erupted after nine children were told they would not be able to go to the school as it was full. Applicants living outside the catchment area with siblings already at the school were given precedence over those living in the town.

But the parents launched appeals against the decision and now two teachers will share one class to accommodate the extra pupils.

Parent council chairwoman Jill McIvor said: "At present the catchment area extends far beyond the boundaries of the town. So this is the obvious thing that they can address and shrink the catchment area down to Castle Douglas town and a little perimeter round about it."

  4. Your views: the worst roads?published at 13:02 British Summer Time 1 September 2015

Michael Redpath emails: I refer to your story on the decline of roads in the Scottish Borders in particular the A72, yes I have to agree it's not in the best condition, but pales into significance compared to the B709

From Innerleithen to the A7, I have seen better equipped roads in poorest Africa, albeit only on TV,

I travel the B709 regularly and every time I am on it there is another part of the road broken away or another filled in pothole has opened up again, this is the worst road in this region in my opinion, not the A72 .

In the Borders, it will turn increasingly cloudy this afternoon, and scattered showers will develop, the odd one heavy.

Borders trainer Iain Jardine made it six wins in a row with Wor Lass at Newcastle races yesterday afternoon.

Jockey Anna Hesketh saw the 7/4 favourite home in the 3.35pm race.

And Hawick-born Keith Dalgleish was also among the winners with Edgar Balthazar in the final race of the day at the north east of England track.

  9. Your views: road conditionspublished at 11:45 British Summer Time 1 September 2015

Jan, from Northern Ireland, emails: The road between Lockerbie and Langholm is a disgrace, I have travelled this road for many years and the pot holes in it would destroy any tyres especially during the dark where you can't see them.

  10. 'Very, very disappointed'published at 11:30 British Summer Time 1 September 2015

    Debbie Muir
    BBC Scotland, Dumfries

Education committee chairman Jeff Lever said he was "very, very disappointed" at the funding problems faced by the Dalbeattie school project.

He added: "Not just for the council itself but also for the youngsters, the parents and the teachers who are looking forward to moving into this brand new, state-of-the-art school in the next couple of years or so.

"The fact that we don't actually know when it's going to resolve is even more frustrating because the schools which it's replacing are not in the best physical condition.

"So what we don't want to do is spend even more money just patching them up while we are waiting for this to be resolved."

  11. School funding problempublished at 11:16 British Summer Time 1 September 2015

    Debbie Muir
    BBC Scotland, Dumfries

Councillors have held a special education committee meeting to ensure that they're ready to begin building the new school at Dalbeattie as soon as funding issues are resolved with outside bodies.

Contracts were due to be signed on 21 September but that is now unlikely, after new EU rules forced the Scottish government to reclassify works on the Aberdeen bypass as a public sector project - at a cost of £745m.

That decision is likely to delay the funding of a number of other projects being channelled through the Scottish Futures Trust, including the Dalbeattie learning campus.

  12. Join the debate: Borders roadspublished at 11:00 British Summer Time 1 September 2015

Peter Symms emails: I was interested in your piece about the condition of Border roads. It is not just the A72 that needs attention, and any local road user will tell you of particularly bad examples.

Some of the surfaces in and around Duns, and a stretch around Chirnside are certainly worthy of notice. Maybe I'm lucky, but I have had only two punctures in the past year - one completely destroyed the tyre.

Infants aged under one are at the most risk of meningitis B infection, which is fatal in one in 10 cases.

Campaigners said the move could prevent up to 4,000 cases by 2025, but warned parents should be aware of symptoms.

It would have seen a levy collected from traders and used to fund projects to boost its "commercial potential".

A ballot required a majority of businesses to vote in favour and that they represent more than 50% of the rateable value of votes cast.
