These were always going to be a difficult set of elections, but we've run a campaign that every candidate and campaigner can be proud of. The process of rebuilding our party will take time, and these elections were fought in an incredibly turbulent time. Yet results overnight show that there's hope. We have gained seats from Labour in Monmouth and Neath Port Talbot, seats from the Conservatives in Flintshire, and from Plaid Cymru in Ceredigion. We will continue to fight on.

We have broken new ground in all parts of Wales from Aberavon to Blaenau Gwent and from Bridgend to Wrexham - the results are all looking positive for Plaid Cymru. It's also good to be holding and gaining seats where we have run councils like in Ceredigion where our strong record on running public services despite the onslaught of cuts. Across Wales there will be more Plaid Cymru councillors defending their communities and standing up to the Tories. The story of the night seems to be Plaid and Tory gains versus Labour and UKIP losses.

  13. Cardiff 'best news for Labour'published at 07:50 British Summer Time 5 May 2017

    Quote Message

The best news of the day for Labour so far. The party has managed to retain control of Cardiff, which the party was widely expected to lose. Newport (also potentially vulnerable) as well as Swansea have been saved too. These results need to be set against the disappointments for Labour in Bridgend, Blaenau Gwent and Merthyr Tydfil and overall there is little evidence to support the proposition from recent polling that Labour are doing particularly badly in Wales.

  15. Conservative reactionpublished at 07:23 British Summer Time 5 May 2017

The Welsh Conservatives said they had seen some “encouraging results overnight”, winning control of Monmouthshire council, “but we take nothing for granted”.

“It’s too early to give an accurate picture, and we can’t assume council results will be repeated at the general election,” a spokeswoman said.

However a separate Tory source said he thought it likely the Conservatives would come out as the largest group in Vale of Glamorgan, if not overall control of the authority.

The area is yet to declare.

He said the gaining of 10 seats in Bridgend bode well for the general election – the seat is a Tory target having been visited by Theresa May last month.

  16. Torfaen - final resultpublished at 07:03 British Summer Time 5 May 2017

  19. 'Labour will be pretty happy'published at 06:46 British Summer Time 5 May 2017

Jac Larner on BBC Radio Wales

Jac Larner from Cardiff University's Wales Governance Centre told Good Morning Wales that “Labour will be pretty happy with how they are doing, although they will say they are disappointed with any losses”.

He said: “They’ve done surprisingly well in Newport holding their majority, they look like they’ve increased their majority in Swansea, and also they’ve made gains in places like Flintshire."

But Mr Larner added Labour had lost control in Blaenau Gwent, which “really emphasises the importance of local issues in local elections”.

He added these elections are seen as a "warm up" to the general election on 8 June, where "we can see how the parties are performing".
