On that basis, Labour may yet hang on to the capital city of Wales. If it does so this will provide some solace to what has otherwise been a rather miserable night for the party."

  12. 05:50 Summarypublished at 05:51 British Summer Time 5 May 2017

Labour has lost overall control of at least two authorities in Wales tonight - and lost a council leader.

The party has lost its majorities in Bridgend and Blaenau Gwent, while earlier in the evening its council leader in Merthyr Tydfil, Brendan Toomey, was unseated. As things stand, it is behind in Merthyr Tydfil but the full result there will not be known for another month.

Labour has retained control of Newport and Neath Port Talbot, and has remained the largest group in Flintshire.

The Conservatives now have a majority in Monmouthshire, which was earlier run by a Tory-Liberal Democrat coalition. Plaid has remained the largest party in Ceredigion, which remains in no overall control, and has made seat gains elsewhere including in Neath Port Talbot.

So far, the Liberal Democrats are down seven seats, compared to their 2012 totals.
