South African police have reportedly arrested a member of a business family with close to links President Jacob Zuma.

This comes as the nation waits to hear if Mr Zuma will step down as ordered by his party, the governing African National Congress (ANC).

Armed police arrived here at the Gupta’s residence early this morning.

They came to make arrests, and local media are now reporting that one Gupta brother and a business associate are in custody, and that other members of the family may be handing themselves into the police.

It’s believed the arrests are linked to an investigation into alleged corruption at a South African dairy - part of a broader scandal that’s known here as “state capture”.

The Guptas are close friends of President Zuma, and employ his son Duduzane.

They have repeatedly denied any wrongdoing.

The timing is hugely significant, as Mr Zuma faces mounting pressure to resign.

South Africans will be watching closely to see whether more prominent arrests follow and whether Mr Zuma will do as the governing ANC has ordered, and step down as a matter of urgency.
