Asked why he had threatened North Korea with "fire and fury" in the past, he says it was appropriate language at the time.

However, many analysts have argued that a bilateral meeting with a sitting US president is a propaganda victory for North Korea.

  13. War games 'expensive'published at 09:42 British Summer Time 12 June 2018

Mr Trump is being asked to elaborate on his decision to end military exercises with South Korea.

He says: "We've done exercises for a long period of time, working with South Korea. We call them war games. They're tremendously expensive. South Korea contributes but not 100%. We have to talk to many countries about treating us fairly. The war games are very expensive, we pay for a big majority of them."

He adds that it is "a very provocative situation" for North Korea. "We're negotiating a very complicated deal... I think it's inappropriate to have war games."

A journalist reminds Mr Trump he once said North Korea has "more brutally oppressed its people than any other regime". "Do you still believe that's the case?" he is asked.

Mr Trump replies: "I believe it's a rough situation over there... " but the main purpose of their discussion was "denuking".

"It's rough, it's rough in a lot of places by the way."

He says human rights were discussed seriously during his talks with Mr Kim.

It's difficult to underestimate how important the joint war games statement is. The US has carries them out with South Korea routinely. Now they are "provocative", says Mr Trump.

They also cost the US a lot of money, he adds.

The are on hold unless future negotiations with North Korea do not go as planned, he adds.

It's unclear if South Korea has been consulted on this. But Mr Trump is speaking with confidence on this point.
