Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida has tried to secure an understanding of the G20 leaders for his decision to release treated water from the Fukushima nuclear plant into the sea, the country's foreign ministry has said.

Japan started releasing treated radioactive water from the wrecked nuclear power plant into the Pacific Ocean last month, sparking criticism from China which has banned all seafood imports from Japan.

Japan maintains that the water is safe for use.

"Prime Minister Kishida explained to G20 leaders that the data monitored since last month's [water] discharge has been made public in a prompt and highly transparent manner. And that no problem has arisen from a scientific standpoint," Hikariko Ono, press secretary at Japan's foreign ministry, told reporters.

The PM is also expected to hold a press conference in Delhi after the summit ends today and give more details about his conversations with world leaders, which includes President Biden, Prime Minister Sunak, and President Macron, Japanese news agency Kyodo reports.

  2. Russia calls G20 declaration balancedpublished at 07:21 British Summer Time 10 September 2023

Russia's G20 negotiator Svetlana Lukash has called the joint declaration "balanced" and said there were "very difficult negotiations on the Ukraine issue", according to , externalRussian news agency Interfax.

"It took almost 20 days to agree on the declaration before the summit and five days here on the spot," Lukash said.

Russia agreed to the joint statement even as President Putin did not attend the Delhi summit. The country sent Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov instead.

State-owned Russian news agency TASS reported , externalthat G20 leaders acknowledged the difference of views on Ukraine in the joint statement.

Leaders arrived at a consensus on the statement on Saturday. While the communique talks about human suffering in Ukraine, it does not directly condemn Russia.

In Bali last year, the G20 members had condemned "in the strongest terms the aggression by the Russian Federation against Ukraine", while noting objections from some nations to this view.

On Saturday, Ukraine's foreign ministry said the G20 had “nothing to be proud of".

Spokesman Oleg Nikolenko shared a post on Facebook quoting the statement with corrections marked in red. Among the corrections were pointed references to Russia and replacement of the neutral term “war in Ukraine” with “war against Ukraine".

  3. Symbolic exchange of saplingspublished at 07:14 British Summer Time 10 September 2023

A short while ago, Indonesian President Joko Widodo and Brazil's Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva handed over saplings to PM Modi. Indonesia had the G20 presidency last year and India will pass it on to Brazil for 2024.

Traditionally, the G20 summit has among its events a tree planting ceremony where leaders plant saplings to draw attention to climate change and the need to preserve nature.

But in Delhi, rain played spoilsport - it's not clear yet if the leaders will get down to planting saplings later when the rain stops.

We'll keep you updated with more details!

  4. Declaration 'nothing to be proud of', says Ukrainepublished at 07:01 British Summer Time 10 September 2023

    Paul Adams
    Diplomatic correspondent, in Ukraine

As we've been reporting, Ukraine is clearly disappointed at the G20’s wording on the war.

The foreign ministry spokesman, Oleg Nikolenko, said the G20 had “nothing to be proud of", while thanking “those who tried to include strong wording in the text".

And in a post on Facebook, he quoted the language of the declaration, complete with a teacher’s corrections in red.

Obviously, these included references to Russia - conspicuously absent from the text agreed in Delhi - and replacement of the neutral term “war in Ukraine” with the rather more pointed “war against Ukraine".

It’s hard for Kyiv to see the absence of any reference to Russian “aggression” (included in the last declaration agreed in November in Bali) as anything but a sign that its Western backers are losing their argument with the “global South” over how to characterise the war.

The visit to Mahatma Gandhi's memorial was President Biden’s last scheduled event in India - he has now left Delhi and is on his way to Vietnam. Reuters reports that Washington and Hanoi are expected to hold discussions to step up relations during Biden’s visit.

  6. UK and US praise G20 declaration but Ukraine upsetpublished at 06:29 British Summer Time 10 September 2023

    Vikas Pandey
    Reporting from G20

The US and the UK have praised the G20 joint declaration.

US national security adviser Jake Sullivan called the statement a “significant milestone" for a "vote of confidence that the G20 can come together to address a pressing range of issues".

And Prime Minister Sunak said the joint declaration has "very strong language" about the war in Ukraine. "What you’ll see in the communique is strong language, highlighting the impact of the war on food prices and food security," Sunak said.

But that's not how Ukraine is seeing the declaration. Oleg Nikolenko, the country's foreign ministry spokesman, said the G20 had “nothing to be proud of". He particularly highlighted the portion of the declaration that said "the war in Ukraine" - Kyiv prefers to call it "the war against Ukraine".

  7. What does the G20 logo mean?published at 06:23 British Summer Time 10 September 2023

Have you taken a careful look at the G20 logo?

It displays the colours of India's national flag – saffron, white, green and blue. It also shows the Earth nestled inside a lotus, symbolising the idea of being in harmony with nature.

The logo reflects this year’s theme “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam” – a Sanskrit phrase which means the whole world is one family and affirms the interconnectedness of all life on the planet.

“India’s G20 presidency is coming at a time of crisis and chaos in the world,” Prime Minister Modi had said while unveiling the logo.“The symbol of the lotus in the logo is a representation of hope in this time. No matter how adverse the circumstances, the lotus still blooms,” he said.

When the logo was first unveiled last year, it sparked a row in India as opposition parties accused Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party(BJP) of deliberately adding a lotus - the party's symbol - to the logo. The BJP denied this, saying that the lotus was also India's national flower.

  8. Millet farm visit, art and shopping for G20 spousespublished at 06:15 British Summer Time 10 September 2023

It isn't only the G20 leaders who've had a packed schedule these past two days, their spouses too have been busy, attending cultural sites in the city and sampling the best of Indian culture and art.

On their tour of Delhi, they visited the National Gallery of Modern Art where they could shop for traditional Indian crafts, weaves and jewellery.

Then came a trip to the Indian Agricultural Research Institute at Pusa, where they were treated to a millet exhibition and met women millet farmers from 11 states.

They were also greeted with a millet rangoli - a floor design made with grains - which showcased the different varieties of millets grown in India.

UK PM Rishi Sunak's wife, Akshata Murty, also paid a visit to the Akshardham temple on Tuesday morning where the couple offered prayers and flowers.

  9. How Delhi's declaration is different from Bali'spublished at 06:00 British Summer Time 10 September 2023

    Vikas Pandey
    Reporting from G20

India has surprised everyone by managing to get the world leaders to agree on the joint declaration. But a close reading of the Delhi draft reveals that the language on the war in Ukraine is not as strong in its condemnation of Russia as it was in the Bali declaration last year.

Ukraine has reacted angrily to the statement, saying there was nothing for the G20 to be proud of.

In Bali, the members reiterated their national positions of "deploring in the strongest terms the aggression by the Russian Federation against Ukraine". But it noted that there were other views and different assessments of the situation and sanctions.

The Delhi declaration does not directly criticise Russia for the war. But it does talk about "the human suffering and negative added impacts of the war in Ukraine with regard to global food and energy security". It also notes that "there were different views and assessments of the situation".

This year's declaration also calls on states to "refrain from the threat or use of force to seek territorial acquisition", which could be seen as directed at Russia.

  10. Excitement around Sunak’s first India visit as PMpublished at 05:45 British Summer Time 10 September 2023

UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak's first official visit to India has been quite an eventful one, and has given the media lots to write about. His visit to Delhi's Akshardham temple on Tuesday morning with wife Akshata Murty has made national headlines. Photos of the couple praying at the temple are all over social media.

Sunak's visit to the country has been a highly anticipated one, because it would make him the first UK prime minister of Indian heritage to visit the country. His family moved to Kenya before India won its independence from Britain in 1947 and his parents later moved to the UK, where he was born in 1980.

India and Britain have also been in talks about a free trade deal and Sunak and PM Modi held a bilateral on Saturday, but there have been no big announcements. Sunak’s spokesperson had recently said a deal would be signed only if it benefitted the “whole of Britain”.

Leaders at Rajghat have been welcomed with scarves made of khadi - fabric made mostly of handwoven cotton.

It's a fitting choice for the occasion - Mahatma Gandhi was a big proponent of khadi, and had turned it into a symbol of India's independence movement and of the ability of Indians to be self-reliant. He weaved his own clothes from khadi on a charkha, or a spinning wheel.

They will then head back to summit venue, Bharat Mandapam, for a tree planting ceremony.

This will be followed by the third and final session of the summit - 'One Future'.The summit ends today with the adoption of the New Delhi Leaders' Declaration, a joint communique. G20 leaders arrived at a consensus on the declaration on Saturday.

  15. Leaders treated to a gala dinnerpublished at 04:42 British Summer Time 10 September 2023

After a busy first day, delegates were treated to a gala dinner hosted by India’s President Droupadi Murmu last night.

The night featured a special musical performance with more than 70 musicians putting together a fabulous show for the guests.

The three course all-vegetarian spread was based on the theme "autumn season of abundance" and featured an array of mouth-watering dishes like a jackfruit galette pastry served with glazed forest mushrooms and Kashmir Kahwa, a spice-flavoured tea.

The leaders were also served millet-based dishes, including a cardamom-scented barnyard millet pudding. India has been promoting millets for the past few years and the UN has declared 2023 as the International Year of Millets after a proposal from India.

Millet also found mention in the draft joint declaration.

"We encourage efforts to strengthen research cooperation on climate-resilient and nutritious grains such as millets, quinoa, sorghum, and other traditional crops including rice, wheat and maize," the statement said.

    Vikas Pandey
    Reporting from G20

As we begin our coverage of day two of the G20 summit, let's quickly recap what happened yesterday.

All of us in the media centre expected that most of the major announcements will happen on the second and final day of the summit - as it usually does.

But nothing was usual about the first day. Right at the start of the summit, Indian PM Narendra Modi announced the inclusion of the African Union into the G20 as a permanent member. For a continent of 1.4 billion people, it's a historic decision as they will now have wider representation on a global platform like the G20.

The second big decision came when Mr Modi announced that there was consensus on the G20 joint declaration, bucking earlier predictions that a deal was tough due to the differences in the group over the war in Ukraine.

The third big news came when the US, Saudi Arabia and the UAE announced an agreement on setting up a rail and shipping corridor, which is being seen as a rival to China's Belt and Road initiative.

And the day was capped with a dinner for the leaders hosted by Indian President Droupadi Murmu.

We're seeing leaders arrive at Rajghat, the memorial to Mahatma Gandhi, to pay their respects to the freedom fighter.

They're being greeted by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the entrance where they are posing for a picture before walking in.

It's been raining through the night and a steady drizzle is falling this morning too as the leaders make their way into the memorial.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Australia's Anthony Albanese were among the first leaders to arrive.

The sprawling complex with lush gardens and an impressive Gandhi statue underwent a thorough beautification drive in the run-up to the summit.

Authorities have added new ornamental features, including a 115-ft Indian flag, and planted more trees and shrubs.

After this, the delegates will head to the summit's main venue, Bharat Mandapam, for other events of the day.

UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and his wife Akshata Murty started their day at the Delhi's Akshardham temple where they arrived this morning to offer prayers.

The couple walked down the paving towards the temple where they offered a prayer and left a flower offering. This was followed by hymns and then a private prayer in other parts of the temple.

Sunak has often described himself as a "proud Hindu" and had said that he would like to visit the temple during his India visit - his first since he took office last October.

“I think faith is something that helps everybody, particularly when you have these stressful jobs like I do,” he said earlier this week.

    Sharanya Hrishikesh
    Reporting from Delhi

Hello and welcome to the second day of the BBC’s live coverage of the G20 summit happening in India’s capital, Delhi.

The first day was more eventful than we all expected - the African Union took a seat at the G20 table, some momentous deals were announced, and some leaders held bilateral meetings.

But the biggest surprise was India announcing early that it had managed to build a consensus on the joint declaration. As we reported yesterday, getting both the West and Russia to sign on was no easy task and the wording of the statement reflects that - it denounces the use of force for territorial gain but stops short of directly criticising Russia. The declaration evoked a strong reaction from Ukraine, which said it was disappointed.

Today, leaders are starting their day by paying tributes to India’s independence hero Mahatma Gandhi at his memorial, Rajghat, in Delhi.

Stay with us as we bring you all the updates.
