    Benson Hoi who lives near the scene in the suburb of Saint-Denis described the events as they unfolded during the night: "I can see about 15 vehicles of army and police and over 100 army and police officers. 

    He told the BBC: "I've been hearing gunshots continuously, like fireworks from 04.30. There have been some breaks but it has seemed like a continuous ... to me it sounds like continuous gunshots."

  2. St-Denis raid: what we know so farpublished at 07:24

    The police operation in St-Denis is ongoing, but here is what we currently know:

    • Heavy shooting, including explosions have been reported in St-Denis, a northern Paris suburb. St-Denis is where the Stade de France, one of the targets of Friday’s attacks, is located, although the current operation is about 2km away.
    • The targets of the raid are the suspected mastermind of the Paris attacks, Abdelhamid Abaaoud; as well as Salah Abdeslam who has been the subject of an international manhunt.
    • Police report three gunmen have been killed and there have been reports of a woman detonating a suicide belt. There have been three arrests.
    • Shooting began at 4.30am local time (0330 GMT) and has continued in bursts in the hours since. At least seven explosions have been heard.
    • Three police officers have been reported injured in the operation, apparently not seriously.

    Among those killed in the St Denis standoff is a woman who detonated an explosives vest, AFP reports citing police sources. It says that at least three police officers were injured in the operation.

    A third gunman has been killed by police forces, making a total of three dead, French media reports. It is unclear if any more gunmen are inside the building.

    The Paris suburb of St Denis is in lock down as the police operation continues. There is now a large military presence on the streets and residents are being told to stay indoors.

    Police have also blocked the roads to the area and a large number of emergency services are on the scene.

  7. Abdelhamid Abaaoud 'holed up with up to five others'published at 07:08

    Police quoted by the AP news agency say that they believe the suspected mastermind of last week's attacks, Abdelhamid Abaaoud, is holed up in an apartment in Saint Denis, along with up to five other heavily armed people. 

    The official says that scores of police who stormed the building early Wednesday were met with unexpectedly violent resistance, the news agency adds. 

    Reinforcements were summoned and several people were injured.

    Reports on French TV say that a woman in the building had a suicide belt and has blown herself up. The reports are still unconfirmed.

    Police have blocked roads leading to St Denis, the BBC's Anna Holligan - who is at the scene - says. Our correspondent says they are shining green lasers at people who come too close. At least three large military trucks packed with soldiers have also been spotted.

  11. Fate of Abdelhamid Abaaoud still unclearpublished at 06:42

    It is still not clear if Abdelhamid Abaaoud,the 28-year-old suspected mastermind of Friday's attacks, is one of the people thought to be inside the apartment in Saint Denis that police are focused on, AFP reports.

    He was previously thought to be in Syria.    

    The 27-year-old grew up in Molenbeek, a district of Brussels.

    He is an associate of Salah Abdeslam, who is on the run and whose brother Brahim blew himself up in Paris.

    Brahim died in the Comptoir Voltaire bar, without killing others. They are all believed to have been recruited by IS.

    "The operation is still under way. It's not over," local member of parliament Mathieu Hanotin told France Inter radio. "Everyone must stay indoors. There are still gunmen holed up in the apartment."

  14. St Denis resident: 'An hour of gunfire'published at 06:33

    A Saint-Denis resident has described to the AP news agency of hearing intense gunfire and explosions during the police operation at Saint Denis. Baptiste Marie, 26, a journalist who lives near the scene of the standoff, said:

    It started with an explosion. Then there was second big explosion. Then two more explosions. There was an hour of gunfire.''

    Another resident Amin Guizani, 21, said: "There were grenades. It was going, stopping. Kalashnikovs. Starting again." 

    Riot police were clearing the streets early Wednesday, pointing guns at bemused residents to move them off the roads. 

    Ms Marie said the officers seemed tense. "You could see it in their eyes."

    Radio Monte Carlo is reporting that Abdelhamid Abaaoud, the alleged mastermind of the Paris attacks, is the focus of the police operation in Saint Denis. The report is unverified. 

    Shooting is reported to have stopped in the past 15 minutes.
