  1. Bomb attacks 'continuing on parliament'published at 04:20 British Summer Time 16 July 2016

    The situation in Turkey remains unclear for now. Officials in the country have been saying the situation is now under control. 

    However, the Reuters news agency is reporting that bomb attacks on Turkey's parliament are continuing, citing a senior Turkish official.

    The official also said there were more fatalities in Istanbul - in addition to the 42 killed in Ankara.

    BBC journalist Rengin Arslan says "a gloomy picture" is emerging in Turkey as the sun rises this morning. She says the previous night was "a nightmare for Turkey". People were expecting some form of trouble in the country, but nothing that serious. She said it was the first time people have heard jets flying so low over cities. "This is a very dreadful experience for us to have," she says.

    Filiz Kerestecioglu, an MP for the HDP party, tweeted that the sounds of bombs and jets in the air above Ankara have stopped, but the noise of "serious conflict" continues.

    The background of the coup attempt remains unclear, however people have alleged it could involve a US-based cleric.

    President Erdogan earlier told CNN Turk by mobile phone the action was by a "parallel structure". 

    He has used this term in the past to refer to Fethullah Gulen, a cleric who is living in exile in Pennsylvania.

    A spokesman in a prosecutor's office says at least 42 people have been killed in Ankara, the Turkish capital - including 17 police officers.

  10. Soldiers take control of Istanbul airportpublished at 03:27 British Summer Time 16 July 2016

    The Reuters news agency has reported that soldiers took control of Istanbul's main Ataturk airport on Saturday shortly after President Tayyip Erdogan landed there. 

    A military tank was positioned outside the airport earlier, when incoming flights were diverted.

    The state-run Anadolu news agency said operations at the airport were back to normal and that flights would begin again at 06:00 (03:00 GMT).

  11. Turkish PM: Shoot down coup aircraftpublished at 03:16 British Summer Time 16 July 2016

    Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yildirim has ordered the military to shoot down any aircraft hijacked by coup plotters. 

    He says military jets have taken off from an air base in Eskisehir, east of Ankara.
