  1. Coup attempt defeated - Turkish intelligence agencypublished at 02:01 British Summer Time 16 July 2016

    A spokesman for Turkey's national intelligence agency, MIT, says the coup attempt has been defeated but that there are some pockets of resistance. 

    "People are marching on these groups. All people who have taken part in this attempt will stand trial for treason. There is no problem for the time being," Nuh Yilmaz is quoted as saying by the Hurriyet website.  

  2. Soldiers 'lay down arms at Istanbul square'published at 01:55 British Summer Time 16 July 2016

    The Reuters news agency reports about 30 Turkish soldiers have surrendered their weapons after being surrounded by armed police in Istanbul's Taksim Square.   

    Earlier, troops clashed with a crowd of government supporters who had gathered there to protest against the attempted coup.

    A group of soldiers has entered the Istanbul premises of Turkey's private media group Dogan Media and cut the live broadcast of its CNN-Turk TV channel.

    The state-run Anadolu news agency and broadcaster NTV say two civilians have been killed in clashes in Istanbul. 

    Earlier, there were reports that troops had opened fire at anti-coup protesters who tried to cross the Bosphorus Bridge.

  7. Parliament building 'hit by bomb'published at 01:25 British Summer Time 16 July 2016

    More details are emerging about the reported bomb attack on the parliament building in Ankara. 

    CNN-Turk reported that some police officers and parliament workers were hurt. 

    A man living not far from the area told the Associated Press that he heard a massive explosion that shook buildings and saw a column of smoke. But he could not confirm it it was coming from parliament itself. Fighter jets were also flying low in the area, he said.

  8. Turkish PM: 'Situation largely under control'published at 01:22 British Summer Time 16 July 2016

    Prime Minister Binali Yildirim earlier said the situation in Turkey was largely under control, adding that the coup attempt was by followers of Fethullah Gulen. The military's chief of staff was on duty, he added, rejecting earlier reports that he was taken hostage.

    Mr Yildirim also tells broadcaster NTV that a no-fly zone has been declared over Ankara.

    A movement loyal to the US-based Turkish Muslim cleric Fethullah Gulen has condemned the coup attempt in Turkey and accusations by the president's supporters that it is somehow involved. 

     "We condemn any military intervention in domestic politics of Turkey," the Alliance for Shared Values says in a statement quoted by the Reuters news agency. 

    "Comments by pro-Erdogan circles about the movement are highly irresponsible," it adds.

  13. Obama: 'All parties should support democratically-elected government'published at 00:45 British Summer Time 16 July 2016

    US President Barack Obama has urged all parties in Turkey to "support the democratically-elected government of Turkey, show restraint, and avoid any violence or bloodshed", the White House says. 

     Secretary of State John Kerry has also spoken by telephone to his Turkish counterpart, Mevlut Cavusoglu, and told him that the US "views with gravest concern events unfolding in Turkey", according to a statement.

  14. Special forces chief: 'We will overcome this'published at 00:44 British Summer Time 16 July 2016

    The commander of Turkey's military special forces, Gen Zekai Aksakalli, tells NTV television by telephone that "those who are attempting a coup will not succeed". "Our people should know that we will overcome this... We are in control of the situation." 

    The general said some deaths and injuries were reported during the coup attempt, without providing any details. 

  15. Injuries reported on Istanbul's Bosphorus Bridgepublished at 00:28 British Summer Time 16 July 2016

    We're getting images of some injuries among anti-coup protesters on the Bosphorus Bridge in Istanbul.

    Many of them are too graphic to display. Live images broadcast at about 01:10 local time (23:00 GMT) appeared to show a number of people being shot on the bridge.

    The private Dogan news agency reported that soldiers had opened fire on people trying to cross the bridge.

  16. UN chief appeals for calmpublished at 00:23 British Summer Time 16 July 2016

    United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has appealed for calm in Turkey.

    "The secretary general is closely following developments in Turkey. He is aware of the reports of a coup attempt in the country," spokesman Farhan Haq says.

  17. Anadolu: Jets seeking to engage rebel helicopters over Ankarapublished at 00:21 British Summer Time 16 July 2016

    Turkey's state agency Anadolu reports that the army's jets are flying over the capital Ankara to "neutralise" helicopters being used by those behind the coup.

    Anadolu names the group "Feto", which is what Turkey's government calls the Hizment movement run by the cleric Fetullah Gulen.

    Our report from 00:19BST suggests that a helicopter may well already have been shot down over Ankara.

    The state-run Anadolu news agency reports that 17 police officers have been killed in an aerial attack on the Golbasi special operations department in Ankara. 

  19. Report: Army helicopter downed by Turkish fighter jetpublished at 00:09 British Summer Time 16 July 2016

    Turkish broadcaster NTV reports that a Sikorsky helicopter belonging to the army group attempting a coup has been downed by a Turkish military F-16 jet.

    This is only one report so far, so we will bring you more on this when we get it.
