Summary

  • A second day of counting has concluded after Ireland's general election

  • All of the Dáil's 160 seats left have been filled, but negotiations to establish a government could be prolonged

  • Sinn Féin topped the polls with 24.5% of first-preference votes, compared to 22.2% for Fianna Fáil and 20.9% for Fine Gael

  • But Sinn Féin ran fewer candidates than its rivals, so no one party is able to win enough seats for an outright majority in the main house of the Irish parliament

  12. A former taoiseach's takepublished at 16:54 Greenwich Mean Time 10 February 2020

Former Fianna Fáil leader Bertie Ahern has told BBC News NI's Evening Extra programme that the party needs to look at all of its options before it goes into government.

"I think Fianna Fáil have to look at their options. They can't come to any fast conclusions," he said.

He added that Fianna Fáil's less than favourable electoral performance is largely down to its involvement in the confidence-and-supply arrangement.

"I'm afraid the electorate very much saw the government, Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael, as one," he said.

Mr Ahern served as Taoiseach (Irish PM) for 11 years between 1997 to 2008.
