Summary

  • A second day of counting has concluded after Ireland's general election

  • All of the Dáil's 160 seats left have been filled, but negotiations to establish a government could be prolonged

  • Sinn Féin topped the polls with 24.5% of first-preference votes, compared to 22.2% for Fianna Fáil and 20.9% for Fine Gael

  • But Sinn Féin ran fewer candidates than its rivals, so no one party is able to win enough seats for an outright majority in the main house of the Irish parliament

The main count centre in Dublin is much less busy than it was 24 hours ago.

But every now and again, a crowd gathers round the central podium to witness the moment a candidate is deemed elected to the 33rd Dáil.

It’s at these stages that the counting process can be at its most complex – with transfers being allocated, and tense waits for some politicians in tight races for the final seats in each constituency.

Current projections predict Fianna Fáil is still likely to end up as the largest party – but only just.

With almost three quarters of seats declared – Sinn Féin remains out in front – still riding the wave of its victory in the first preference vote.
