    Sarah Hansmann Rouxel and Jeremy Smithies have been elected to the next States of Guernsey.

    Sitting deputy, Garry Collins, who polled 7th in the 2012 election has lost his seat.

    The remaining four sitting candidates: Matt Fallaize (poll topper for the 3rd time), Dave Jones, Mary Lowe and Laurie Queripel retain their seats.

  3. Three deputies lose their seats in Castelpublished at 23:38 British Summer Time 27 April 2016

    Sandra James, Darren Duquemin and Hunter Adam have all lost their seats in the States after they failed to gain re-election in the Castel.

    First-time candidate Richard Graham topped the polls with 2,321 vote, while sitting deputies Chris Green, Barry Paint, Mark Dorey and Jonathan Le Tocq were also elected.

    The district is the first to declare in today's election.

    Some candidates standing today are vying to return to their former stomping ground in the States, after they were burnt by the electoral process at the last election.

    Former Deputy Chief Minister Bernard Flouquet failed to gain re-election in 2012, along with Michael Garrett, Rhoderick Matthews, Leon Gallienne, James Stephens, Ivan Rihoy and Shane Langlois.

    We'll keep you posted on whether any of them make their political comeback.

    While Guernsey voters have a number of votes equal to the number of available seats most don't use all of their votes.

    In 2012 voters in the Castel used the most with an average of 5.2 votes for the seven seats available, while those in St Peter Port South used the least with just 4.2 votes for the six available places.

    Unlike in the UK, 16 and 17-year-olds have had the right to vote in Guernsey since the 2008 election - but how unique is this set up?

    Fellow islands Jersey and the Isle of Man also have a minimum voting age of 16, alongside countries like Austria, Germany, Norway, Argentina and Brazil.

    But our political expert Adrian Lee says this only represents a "few jurisdictions" - in Japan for instance the minimum voting age was only lowered to 18 from 20 last year.

    A record number of people have given their stamp of approval to Guernsey's 2016 election by signing up for postal votes.

    The popularity of posting your vote - allowed in Guernsey since 1972 - has grown significantly in recent years.

    Voters had until midday today to deliver their completed ballot slips, either by post or by hand, to Sir Charles Frossard House.

    Deputy Chief Minister Allister Langlois is warning older candidates against thinking they can partially retire in the States.

    He says his age is part of the reason he is not standing for re-election.

    At least 21 of the 81 candidates standing are above the retirement age of 65 this year.

    That includes Rick Lowe for the West District who turned 65 today - happy birthday from us!
