    Thirty serving deputies have stood for re-election but at least two will lose their seats in the Castel district.

    The number of seats has been reduced from seven to five, as part of the wider cut to the total number of deputies from 45 to 38.

    A total of 81 candidates are competing for the 38 seats in Guernsey's government - although one candidate, William Newman in the Vale, asked people not to vote for him after changing his mind about standing. Due to Guernsey law his name still appeared on the ballot paper.

    With 19 women up for election, today's polls see the highest number of female candidates standing since the system of government changed in 2004.

    All five of the women currently serving in the States are up for re-election, alongside 14 other female candidates.

    At the last election in 2012, 12 of the 78 candidates were women.

    Guernsey's deputy chief minister has given his election predictions on BBC Radio Guernsey this evening.

    Allister Langlois said he believes the next States of Guernsey will be made up of 21 returning deputies and 17 new faces.

    The number of people registered to vote today has topped that of 2012 - with 30,320 registered compared to 29,741 in 2012.

    When the figures were announced reigstrar general Mark de Garis said: "We haven't shied away from seeking to engage with people who have appeared disengaged with politics."

    Figures are up in each of the seven electoral districts for the election, which will see fewer deputies elected in a smaller States.

    We'll be here until all the results are in, but if you're planning on staying up you might be interested in knowing how late it may be.

    - In 2012 the last declaration was the St Peter Port North district at 01:26

    - In 2008 it was the same district at 01:44

    - In 2004 it 00:40 and it was St Peter Port North

    Notice a theme? Dennis Le Moignan, returning officer for the district, told our reporter Oliver Guillou that it may be due to the voluntary counters being older than those in other districts.

    As always there will also be a race to be the first with the Vale, Castel and the West taking the honours in the last three elections.

    Based on the numbers the South East is the most competitive district with the most candidates per seat.

    Political expert Adrian Lee has described the election in April as the most competitive under the current political system.
