    In Jersey the current topic is the separation of the Bailiff's role as both chief judge and speaker.

    In Guernsey it is the plan aiming to make the island "the happiest and healthiest place in the world" by first deciding what the island should be like in 20 years.

    The losses suffered in just three days in 1917 impacted almost every family in Guernsey "for years and years".

    After the British advance during the Battle of Cambrai in World War One the Royal Guernsey Light Infantry held the line at Masnieres for three days.

    Historian Chris Oliver said: "Against terrible losses they managed to hold a bulge in the line."

    Nearly 600 men, about 40% of the regiment, were reported killed, injured or missing during the battle.

    Guernsey Post has reported profits of £388,000 for the year ending 31 March 2016, a 23% drop from the previous year.

    In 2015, the States-owned company made £506,000.

    I've been doing some number crunching...

    Contributing to the lower profits was the fact the company received £173,000 less income from interest, and paid a £187,000 increase in pension costs.

    Income dropped by £2.7m, but expenses dropped further, by £2.8m.

    Last night the youngest grey seal pup to be taken in by Guernsey's animal shelter was rescued in Alderney.

    Now named "Poppy", she has made it through her first night and is receiving further treatment with the GSPCA team and vet today.

    Poppy was found with various injuries, underweight, and with "no sign of a mother".

    The £800,000 hiring of eight agency staff at Jersey's Children's Social Services Department was identified as a significant governance risk by the States treasurer and chief officer because they say normal recruitment procedures "were not followed", raising concerns that inappropriate staff could be appointed.

    The most expensive post - revealed in the Freedom of Information request - was for 20 months, costing £210,000 to fill, but more specific details have not been made available.

    The response to a Freedom of Information request says the Children's Services manager at the time was given permission to hire whoever she wanted.

    Earlier this year, she told Jersey's care inquiry that, when she started the job, senior management didn't know what they were doing and had to be replaced.

    The nomination period for the Alderney States election closed at 16:00 and there are 13 candidates standing for the five available seats.

    They are Tony Barnes, Paul Clark, Mike Dean, James Dent, Neil Harvey, Tony Haywood, Louis Jean, Debbie Lewis, Lin Maurice, Christopher Rowley, Francis Simonet, Alex Snowdon and Simon Wild.

    Jersey's chief minister has been asked in the States if he plans to follow Guernsey's government in congratulating Donald Trump on becoming president of the USA.

    Senator Ian Gorst told politicians: "I have not done so and nor do I plan to do so."

    When asked to clarify why he said: "I am not aware the outgoing president of the United States was sent a congratulatory letter. We don't send every head of States a congratulatory letter."

    The president of the Committee for Health and Social Care says Guernsey needs to promote preventative health care in the coming years.

    In her successful change to the Future Plan for Guernsey, Deputy Heidi Soulsby stressed the need for personal responsibility and prevention for personal well-being and care.

    She says medication and operations aren't going to be sustainable in the coming years.

    Jersey's health minister has defended his choice of restructuring the current site to make a new hospital.

    Ahead of a public hearing by a scrutiny panel tomorrow, States members asked Senator Andrew Green to explain why it was chosen instead of the Waterfront.

    He says the scheme meant less disruption to patients who would have otherwise had to move more than 40 times during a lengthy building programme.

    A memorial stone to be unveiled in Masnieres, France, on 30 November 2017, is a chance to connect the town with Guernsey.

    Nearly 600 men from the Royal Guernsey Light Infantry were reported killed, injured or missing during the Battle of Cambrai in World War One.

    During the battle they held the town against a German counter attack for three days.
