    Guernsey's northern parishes will be underwater, external if global warming levels are not lowered, according to an international researcher.

    Commercial fishermen from Guernsey and Jersey should work together to protect their industries, according to a Guernsey fisherman's representative.

    The message from Barry Paint, who also sits in the States of Guernsey, comes after Jersey fishermen hit out at a £500 licence fee their Guernsey counterparts don't have to pay to fish in Bailiwick waters.

    Jersey fishermen say the charge to renew their Guernsey fishing licences threatens their historic fishing rights.

    Guernsey fishing officials say the charge is routine and non-political.

    It's the latest chapter in long-running tensions between the islands over commercial fishing.

    Debate on a vote of no confidence in the States of Guernsey could be cut short.

    Deputy Lyndon Trott said if the debate was still continuing at 15:30 after the States resumes from lunch at 14:30 he would put forward a guillotine motion.

    If successful only Deputy Emilie Yerby, the proposer of the vote of no confidence, and those who have not yet spoken will be able to speak before the vote is taken.

    People in Jersey are being asked to consider if they could become foster parents.

    Fostering and Adoption Jersey Publicity Officer Margarida Lourenco-Olivier said: “We need foster carers from all walks of life - married, single, mixed and same sex couples, as well as from different cultural and religious backgrounds. 

    "Foster carers leave a lasting positive impression on lives, and without them young people would have limited opportunities to reach their potential."

    A deputy for the South East of Guernsey has described a catalogue of ineptitude by the education committee as one of the reasons he's supporting a vote of no confidence in them.

    Deputy Paul Le Pelley, the President of Guernsey's Committee for Education, Sport and Culture says his committee is delivering and doesn't think a motion of no confidence will be successful.

    He told the States: "We are delivering what you've asked us to deliver, we've got a few hiccups, we've had a few problems in getting here.

    "We have done our very, very best to try to manage those."

    Deputy Le Pelley went on to say: "I know I have the support of my committee... I know I have the support of the majority of my electorate because of the number of emails I've had coming in telling me... and I also know, I'm pretty sure when the numbers come out that I've got the majority of people in here."

    The States has broken for lunch and will resume at 14:30.

    Jersey Reds chairman Mark Morgan hopes the club will be able to buy back their ground within three years.

    The Championship club was forced to sell their assets for £1.5m in November in order to see out the season.

    They hope to sell a plot of land that they own for £750,000 within the next few months to halve their fundraising target.

    Charges made in the vote of no confidence are "quite insulting", says the president of Guernsey's under fire education committee.

    Deputy Paul Le Pelley told the States it was written like an "academic, university debating society" and was "misleading people into thinking certain things happened in a certain order".

    He said: "To be honest a lot of what is in here [the letter of no confidence] is a load of tosh and should be thrown out."

  10. No direct flights to Barcelona from Guernsey this summerpublished at 12:44 Greenwich Mean Time 11 January 2017

    A lack of slots has stalled a bid by Aurigny to repeat its direct summer service to Barcelona.

    The States-owned airline described the direct service - run over four Saturdays in July and August - as a success as it "exceeded expectations for its passenger numbers".

    However, a lack of slots at Barcelona and Girona airports mean the airline is not able to offer the service.

    A spokesman said the airline was looking into options for a European summer destination next year.

  11. Closure to impact on bus routepublished at 12:18 Greenwich Mean Time 11 January 2017

    Emergency repairs to potholes in the Route des Blanches, St Martin, tomorrow will affect Guernsey bus route 81, external.

    The road is due to be closed from 09:00-14:00 and while it is closed the outbound bus service will miss out Route de Jerbourg.

    A 31-year-old Polish man charged with the armed robbery of Temple Stores in Stopford Road on Thursday has appeared in Jersey's Magistrate's Court.

    Pawel Dzielak was not required to enter a plea before Magistrate Bridget Shaw as the matter was sent to the Royal Court to be heard due to its serious nature.

    He was remanded in custody until his next court appearance on 8 February.

  13. Alderney bird hide to be renovated for wheelchair userspublished at 11:55 Greenwich Mean Time 11 January 2017

    The bird hide at Longis pond on Alderney is being renovated to make it suitable for wheelchair users and those with restricted mobility.

    The work will also mean improved facilities for all users and make it more child friendly, those behind the plans have said.

    People who keep domestic poultry are being advised to minimise contact with wild birds.

    Advice from the Department of the Environment’s Veterinary Officer is that, where possible, domestic chickens, ducks, geese should be kept indoors or in a netted area.

    In Jersey, no licenses are being given for any sort of poultry gathering.

    In addition, all poultry importations now require an individual licence, with certain conditions set out for each one.

    These measures will remain in place until at least 28 February.

    Deputy Emilie Yerby has set out why she's placing a vote of no confidence in Guernsey's education committee. 

    A motion signed by the her and six others is being debated in the States this morning.

    She says the current members were not elected on a change mandate - and it's no longer appropriate current members work up the plans for the new system of secondary education.
