  1. Calls for changes to Jersey driving testpublished at 09:42 Greenwich Mean Time 11 January 2017

A leading Jersey driving instructor wants to change the driving test so learners can practice at the island's upper speed limit.

At the moment, people taking their tests don't go on roads with a 40mph speed limit.

Brian Beadle, the President of the Driving Instructors Association, says it's about time that changed.

Jersey fishermen say they are being persecuted by Guernsey, after the island decided to charge them £500 to fish in its waters.

The charge only applies to Jersey boats. It's the latest chapter in long-running tensions between the islands over commercial fishing.

In the latest disagreement, Jersey fishermen say they're being asked to pay to renew their licences to fish in Guernsey waters.

They say that's unfair discrimination, because Guernsey fishermen don't have to pay it.

  3. 'Game playing' behind no confidence votepublished at 08:57 Greenwich Mean Time 11 January 2017

Having spoken to most of the members of Guernsey's education committee on the eve of the vote of no confidence it's clear that they are resolute in their belief that they are best placed to deliver a new system of secondary education in the islands.

There is a deep seated belief on the present committee that those behind the motion being debated today are "game playing" and that there is a lot of politicking going on behind the scenes.

Time and again Deputy Emilie Yerby and others claim that they are acting in the best interests of the community.

Whatever the outcome, simply holding this debate has the potential to further erode public confidence in the assembly as well as deepening division among its members.

  4. Baby death 'might have been prevented'published at 08:37 Greenwich Mean Time 11 January 2017

A tribunal has heard the death of a newborn baby in Guernsey in 2014 might have been prevented, if a previous incident had been properly investigated.

Three midwives at the Princess Elizabeth Hospital are facing misconduct charges at a Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) hearing in London.

Lisa Granville, Antonia Manousaki and Tuija Roussel were working on Loveridge Ward when the baby's death prompted an extensive NMC review of local maternity services.

The tribunal heard the baby was desperately ill and should have been reported to a consultant.

The NMC claimed a similar case in 2012 was closed inappropriately after a brief examination, despite serious concerns which should have been investigated.

The NMC said poor quality midwifery care was not identified, challenged or reviewed, and the so-called 'Guernsey way' meant proper procedures weren't always followed.

The three women accept some charges but deny others. Their lawyers have made defence submissions. The hearing resumes today and it's expected to take four weeks.

Guernsey's education committee is facing a vote of no confidence today.

The vote has been brought by seven deputies in relation to plans to end the use of 11-plus exams for selection in the education system.

Last month they wrote a letter detailing their concerns of "confusion" and "inconsistency" within the committee and asked members to either step down or seek a fresh mandate.
