Jersey's Planning Committee originally turned down the application saying it wouldn't fit in with the character of the location, and didn't have any onsite parking.

    BBC World Service

The UN has declared that South Sudan is in the grip of famine - and the Channel Islands have given £250,000 towards the aid effort.

Humankind long ago figured out how to avoid famine

Humans, they say, have created this misery – misery which could easily have been avoided.

The UN has also warned that conflicts in Yemen, Somalia and Nigeria mean there could soon be famine in those countries too, creating “the largest humanitarian crisis since the creation of the United Nations” in 1945.

"It used to be 'just man up and get on with it, what are you moaning about' whereas now throughout training and command people will listen and they do understand."

Two-hundred thousand pounds sent from Jersey to famine-hit East Africa will pay for food rations, hygiene kits and essential medical supplies.

"Really what we're facing now is a catastrophic situation where people are dying and it's going to get worse, and it really is incumbent on the people of Jersey, frankly as part of the wealth that we have here, to be sharing that with people in other countries who are facing this kind of tragedy that is destroying families and societies."

  13. Student loan scheme 'should be priority'published at 09:52 Greenwich Mean Time 16 March 2017

    Sian Davies
    BBC News Online

A student loan scheme for Jersey should be a priority to make sure island students get the help they need at university, according to a new report from scrutiny.

    Graduates

The education panel has published a report looking at the shortcomings of the current system for funding local students through higher education.

It claims that the system is underfunded compared to other European jurisdictions - and that there needs to be a change to the system to make sure the money that is available can be targeted at those who need it the most.

  19. The fog is back but have we had more than usual?published at 08:31 Greenwich Mean Time 16 March 2017

    Ryan Morrison
    BBC News Online

The fog is back again this morning, blanketing parts of the Channel Islands in a misty glow - something my young son describes as "pirate weather".

Jersey Met say the fog is likely to persist around the coast for the rest of the morning and will return again in the afternoon and evening. It is likely to be worse in Guernsey.

    Fog from BBC Radio Jersey

After several days of fog causing serious disruption at the airports earlier this month I decided to find out if we really have had that much more fog than usual.

The figures, from the Jersey Met Office showed there had been 11 fog days at Guernsey Airport in February, compared to an average of four days. There were seven days at Jersey Airport compared to an average of five.

March isn't over yet so we don't know just how many we've had but I can tell you Guernsey has already passed the average number of days for fog in March - it's had six days compared to an average of five.
