Jersey Zoo's latest change of name from Durrell Wildlife Park has cost "a few thousand pounds", the Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust has said.

The site has changed its name twice in recent years, but has now returned to the name given to it by its founder, Gerald Durrell, so there is less confusion to tourists.

I can't give you an exact figure but, a few thousand pounds. But that's just part of our budget anyway for doing signing. This isn't extra cost to us, it's just part of our normal marketing budget. We have to refresh signs anyway which we do around the island and in the zoo itself.

What we're seeking to do really is if two young people are in a relationship, say for example they're both 14 or 15, and they do send an indecent image of themselves, yes they can break the law, but the aim for us is to give them some form of words of advice, get their parents involved and go down the education route.

  3. More of Fort Tourgis in Alderney cleared for publicpublished at 09:23 British Summer Time 4 April 2017

    BBC Radio Guernsey

More of Fort Tourgis in Alderney is being cleared of undergrowth to make it accessible to the public.

Over the weekend, about 50 volunteers helped out by ripping down ivy and cutting back brambles.

Military historian Trevor Davenport said it appears to be the site of a pistol range and he hopes to have it ready by Easter.

    Quote Message

We want to get it so that it is open to the public and it's an amenity area. Slowly we can do a bit more, but right now we want to clear 70 years of brambles."

  4. New planning policy to discourage 'land banking' in Jerseypublished at 09:09 British Summer Time 4 April 2017

    BBC Radio Jersey

Property developers who get planning permission but do not use it make it difficult for officials to plan ahead, Jersey's planning minister has said.

Deputy Steve Luce has cut the time limit on planning permission from five years to three in a bid to speed up construction.

He said the policy change would discourage "land banking", where a developer delays construction on a property to allow the land to rise in value.

    Quote Message

We still have a number of people coming back and renewing approvals they've had five years ago, for offices, for residential accommodation and for other buildings. What I'd like people to do if they get an approval is to go away and make a conscious effort to go out and build it.

Deputy Steve Luce , States of Jersey Planning Minister

  5. New Jersey hospital money could come from 'rainy day' fundpublished at 08:55 British Summer Time 4 April 2017

    BBC Radio Jersey

Money could be taken from Jersey's rainy day fund to pay for the new hospital instead of the States borrowing it.

The scrutiny panel responsible for examining States spending has come up with the alternative plan.

The original idea put forward by the treasury minister was for the island to borrow up to £400m towards the final cost of the hospital.

The Corporate Services Scrutiny Panel has come up with an alternative proposal for members to consider - which means taking all of the money from the rainy day fund, to pay for the work outright.

  8. 'People think it won't happen to them'published at 08:07 British Summer Time 4 April 2017

    BBC Radio Guernsey

People in Guernsey need to have carbon monoxide detectors in their homes, Guernsey fire bosses have said.

Andy Carre had to call the fire service after his carbon monoxide detectors sounded because of a fault with a solar panel device in his attic.

He said people often don't think about installing them until it's too late.

    Quote Message

I think most people think it won't happen to them, if I'm perfectly honest with you. My wife insisted we had one, I'd definitely thought of fire, but I'd never thought of carbon monoxide. I thought you had to have gas in the house to have a carbon monoxide device. But we have no gas on the property."
