  17. 'Changes in Spain could explain cuckoo population decline'published at 10:06 British Summer Time 18 April 2017

    BBC Radio Guernsey

Changing environmental conditions in Spain may explain a decline in Guernsey's cuckoo population, conservationists say.

The cuckoos are still returning to the island but the numbers have reduced, according to bird expert Jamie Hooper.

He said there has only been a couple of sightings so far this spring.

The birds migrate south in the winter months, but generally come back to Guernsey in March and April.

Mr Hooper said drier conditions on the migratory route through Spain are preventing the birds from refueling in order to make the return journey from their wintering grounds.
