    The warden who looks after the church where the new Dean of Jersey was formerly a rector has said he'll be missed.

    Warden David Hughes said a large congregation in the church in St Martin for Easter Sunday was a great tribute to the work Reverend Mike Keirle had done over his 14-year tenure.

    Mr Keirle led a variety of community projects, including community carol-singing, after-school clubs and other activities to help boost the popularity of the church with young families.

    A 36-year-old man has been discharged from Jersey General Hospital after being cut free from a car by fire crews last night, a spokesperson for the department of health has said.

    The crash happened just after 22:00 at Trinity Hill.

    The man was treated and discharged from hospital at 00:25.

    Jersey's success in reintroducing a popular bird to the wild has inspired a new push to bring the bird back to Kent.

    Choughs have a long history with Kent. The distinctive red-billed member of the crow family can be seen on the coat of arms of the City of Canterbury and has a long association with its martyr saint, Thomas Becket.

    A chough colony was released in Jersey in 2013 and the Durrell Institute of Conservation and Ecology will be working with the University of Kent and Cornwall Choughs to bring a population back to the English county.

    Jersey's treasury minister has said he will ask the communications company Jersey Telecom to cancel plans to charge people extra if they want paper bills or to pay by direct debit.

    He said it was an "insidious charge", especially on older people without computers.

    Speaking in the States Assembly yesterday, Constable John Refault argued that JT had made efforts to help people who needed it.

    But members agreed with Deputy Geoff Southern who said the charge should be withdrawn, and that the treasury minister should put pressure on the company to do so. JT is yet to comment.

    Following months of dispute, the States has agreed to class the streets on the Rue des Pres Trading Estate as main roads. 

    Members of the public will have to pay to park there under new legislation.

    Previously the land was unrestricted leading to complaints about bad parking and blocked rights of way.

    But St Saviour Constable Sadie Le Sueur-Rennard said the new regulations could encourage people to park in nearby housing estates.

    She told members she's "worried sick" that people would try to park there for free instead of going to the paid parking areas, causing problems for residents.

    The Reverend Mike Keirle has trained two women in key church posts and said he was looking forward to working with women priests in Jersey.

    Jersey's men's team will take on an English Football Association XI ahead of the Island Games.

    The Jersey FA confirmed the friendly this morning, with the fixture to be played at Springfield on Tuesday, 30 May. 

    The visiting squad will be made up mainly of players who play in the Vanarama National League. 

    "This will be a big game and a big test for Jersey but it is just the sort of challenge that our players will relish," said JFA president Phil Austin.

    The politician responsible for the island's constitutional affairs, Deputy Matt Fallaize has ruled out the possibility of a snap election occurring in Guernsey's current political system.   

    He said Guernsey's government would have to make a new law to permit it, and that no single politician has the power to call a general election outside of the standard four-year schedule. 

    But, he admitted that theoretically deputies could bring primary legislation for an early vote.

    Ferry service operator Condor has said it is working hard to convince people the Liberation ferry is reliable. 

    CEO Paul Luxon apologised for the disruption an engine fault in its flagship Liberation ferry caused over the Easter weekend, delaying some passengers by six hours. 

    Condor said exceptionally low tides and restricted opening hours for Jersey Harbour contributed to the delays.

    Mr Luxon said the company has worked hard to improve its reliability and reputation.

    Online tax returns should be introduced in Jersey in two years’ time.

    Richard Summersgill, Comptroller of Taxes, said: “Our long-term aim is to make more information available on gov.je to support online filing and assessment which we are still on track to deliver in two years’ time.”

    They are already available in Guernsey.

    The Jersey Taxes Office helpdesk will be closed on Monday 24 and Tuesday 25 April so improvements can be made to the customer area.

    It can still be contacted by phone or email.

    A motorist had to be cut free from his car by Jersey fire crews last night after it overturned.

    The crash happened on Trinity Hill just before 22:00. 

    Crews used hydraulic cutting equipment before handing the driver over to paramedics.

    He was taken to Jersey General Hospital. 

    It's not clear what his condition is.
