  4. Know your drink measurements, police urgepublished at 17:42 British Summer Time 28 April 2017

    Guernsey Police are reminding islanders and licensed premises to make sure they clearly understand the size of measures being served to them within pubs and restaurants. 

    It follows reports on social media from people who claim to have been served large measures without their prior knowledge.

    Superintendent Nigel Taylor of Guernsey Police said: “The customer should always be supplied with the size of measure stated on the price list displayed in the pub or restaurant.  

    "The measure should never be under or over the measure stated." 

    "Price lists should always be available in clear view to members of the public and should stipulate what size a standard measure is for that particular establishment, together with the cost.”

    The Police says they will remind license premises of the laws, but ultimately the customer is responsible for requesting the size of measure required.  

  5. New Guernsey Jurat to be electedpublished at 17:41 British Summer Time 28 April 2017

    The Bailiff has received three nominations for the office of Jurat of the Royal Court to replace Jurat Margaret Spaargaren. 

    The Jurats act as a jury, and are judges of fact in both civil and criminal cases.

    Michael Newell Reiss Burrows, Sandra Lillian Silvestri and Joanne Marie Wyatt have all been proposed and seconded.

    The States of Election will meet on Wednesday 17 May to choose the new Jurat.

    A charity cooking event has been taking place at Highlands College today.

    The Les Amis, external Mastercook saw Islanders supported by the charity working alongside students at the College’s Academy of Culinary Arts to create dishes from a box of ingredients.

    This year's category is 'Afternoon Tea' and has been judged by Eileen Buicke-Kelly, Director of Culinary Arts and Catering Operations at the Academy, Chef Lecturer Dominic Farrell and Ashley Cox, Jersey managing director of Les Amis’s corporate partner ZEDRA.  

  7. Naval ship may not appear at boat showpublished at 17:23 British Summer Time 28 April 2017

    The appearance of a Royal Navy patrol vessel at the Jersey boat show is in doubt.

    HMS Mersey had been expected to appear, but may now not be able to because of "operational duties".

    The Ports of Jersey said it "Continues to liaise with the Royal Navy in the hope that the ship may make an appearance on Sunday and Monday". 

    "While this is very disappointing we fully appreciate that the appearance of all Royal Navy assets at the show are subject to these operational commitments."

    A number of other Royal Navy vessels are appearing over the weekend.

    There were 740 more people in work in Jersey this year than at the same time the previous year, according to Jersey Stats Unit's Labour Market Survey. 

    The survey found there were 1,010 more jobs in the private sector and 270 fewer in the public sector.

    Deputy Geoff Southern of Reform Jersey welcomed the figures due to a reduction in the number of zero hour contracts.

    He said: "The proportion of zero-hour employment in the public sector has fallen to just over 6% of the total. 

    "The use of zero-hours, often inappropriately, remains stubbornly high in comparison with the UK, at 11%."

  9. Condor responds to contract claimspublished at 16:43 British Summer Time 28 April 2017

    The boss of Condor Ferries says the company remains committed to running the service.

    Earlier today Seputy Peter Ferbrache said he "will not be advocating to the States any kind of contract with Condor anytime soon as we are significantly apart in our aspirations."

    Guernsey has an ongoing agreement with Condor but no legally binding contract.

    Paul Luxon, CEO of Condor Ferries said: "We published the Comprehensive Service Review in November of last year and our focus is working intelligently to implement the recommendations as detailed in that report. 

    "Condor’s senior management team is in regular and constructive discussions with the Committee for Economic Development in Guernsey and the Minister for Economic Development in Jersey and through this proactive engagement we are able to explore and evaluate all viable options and opportunities." 

    "We remain absolutely committed to continuing to provide reliable and enjoyable sea connectivity between the communities we serve through our freight, lifeline and tourism services."

  10. Comeback gig for Jonopublished at 16:30 British Summer Time 28 April 2017

    A Jersey musician, who suffered life changing injuries in a ski accident three years ago, is singing in a comeback gig this evening. 

    Jono Rothwell, who regularly played across the Island, has been re-learning the words to his favourite songs to perform with friends at the Goose on the Green pub in St Peter.

    Mr Rothwell ruptured a tumour and was on life support following the accident in Austria. 

    The event is in aid of Jersey Cheshire Home which is helping him to learn to live with his brain injury and blindness.

    Environment ministers from Britain's overseas territories are warning they face a serious cash shortfall if the UK fails to plug the EU funding gap. 

    Combined, the 11 UK Overseas Territories and Crown Dependencies are home to a far greater concentration of endangered species than any other part of the UK mainland.

    The ministers have been meeting in Alderney this week, to discuss how they can work together to retain the funding the EU gives to environmental protection.  

  12. Higher savings threshold for social tenants in Guernseypublished at 15:39 British Summer Time 28 April 2017

    Pensioners in Guernsey will be allowed to save additional money before being moved out of social housing.

    A new Capital Sums Policy means people can save £20,000 more than they used to be allowed.

    President of the Committee for Employment and Social security, Michelle Le Clerc says this is to make sure they only ask a tenant to leave social housing if they're confident they can afford to rent a property in the private sector.

    Guernsey's Committee for Economic Development will put forward a runway extension business case this summer. 

    This is despite the suggestion being rejected when the runway was resurfaced.

    Costs have previously been estimated at £30m.

    President Peter Ferbrache has told BBC Radio Guernsey his committee sees it as the best way to attract new airlines and protect the Gatwick route.

    Brexit poses a serious threat to efforts to protect the environments of small island states, according to a Gibraltar politician.

    John Cortes made the remarks at a conference for environment ministers from the Crown dependencies and British overseas territories which is taking place in Alderney. 

    Mr Cortes said in addition to loss of EU money - which some places received for conservation programs - the EU laws which once protected the British-affiliated small states, will also be lost.

    It's already cost about £15m and it was meant to be published before Christmas. 

    But the official report into the abuse which happened in Jersey care homes has been delayed twice already - the last time in March when the panel missed its own deadline and said it would be ready "soon".

    This week, Alan Collins, a lawyer acting for members of the Jersey Care Leavers Association, said the delays were raising a lot of questions and victims were losing faith in the panel's work.

    Today the panel issued a short statement which said it would publish its findings on 3 July.

    But it also said that date would be subject to any other "unforeseen circumstances". It has remained tight lipped about the reasons for the delays, except to say that it was reviewing extra evidence.

  18. Some prisoners get the right to vote from todaypublished at 12:56 British Summer Time 28 April 2017

    New laws that comes into force today give prisoners in Jersey the right to vote. It comes after a States decision to extend the franchise earlier this year.

    The changes mean that certain categories of people in prison will be able to vote in public elections. 

    The laws were registered at the Royal Court on the 21 April and come into force today. It is only for prisoners who were sentenced to less than four years.

    Jersey next goes to the polls in a general election in May 2018.
