  1. Jersey sea wall work to start in Julypublished at 14:37 British Summer Time 12 June 2017

    Ryan Morrison
    BBC News Online

Work to raise the height of the sea wall at Beaumont in Jersey will start in July and will take about 14 weeks.

The area around the Gunsite has been flooded on several occasions when there have been storms and high spring tides. The Department for Infrastructure says this is getting worse due to climate change.

There will be two phases to the work, the first will see the wall made about a foot higher from the Gunsite eastwards. The second will see it get higher still but won't start until 2018 when funding is available.

  2. Police 'failed to provide documents' over legal actionpublished at 14:18 British Summer Time 12 June 2017

    Chris Rayner
    BBC Radio Jersey Political Reporter

A report finds Jersey Police failed to provide documents to a former business owner who was trying to sue them.

Roy Boschat faced bribery allegations in 2005 but was never prosecuted and denies any wrong doing in the way his tow truck business dealt with the aftermath of vehicle accidents.

The report by the Police Service of Northern Ireland found serious organisational and individual failings by Jersey police, but said Mr Boschat wasn't deliberately obstructed from taking action.

  3. Aurigny review: 'No censensus, but agreement in many significant areas'published at 14:08 British Summer Time 12 June 2017

    Quote Message

It is no secret that the review panel has, in a number of areas, been unable to reach a consensus. However there are many more areas, all of them significant, where agreement has been reached. Taken together, these recommendations provide a platform for significant and positive change, and it is believed [it will] provide a basis for Aurigny as a business to reduce their losses and provide a service that supports our community and our economy.

Deputy Lyndon Trott, Chairman, Aurigny Strategic Review

    Ryan Morrison
    BBC News Online

Last month the Condor Liberation collided with a mooring pontoon and hit a yacht while coming into St Peter Port Harbour. Nobody was injured and the delay to the ferry timetable was only an hour.

Condor Ferries made a number of recommendations to ensure it didn't happen again which were endorsed by the Guernsey Harbourmaster.

    They include:

    • The Master undertook a review of his own notes regarding marks and identification of go/no go areas as well as contingency plans.
    • He also conducted a period of duty with an additional master sailing in support.
    • This scenario will be added to the simulator training options.
    • Additional training for crew members who report distances to the bridge will be provided.
    • The company will review the position of navigational aids on each bridge wing.
    • The recommendations from the company response will be held on file for lessons that could be relevant to any new tonnage, either new build or purchase.

    Ben Chapple
    BBC News Online

The results of a Strategic Review of Aurigny, external, the Guernsey States-owned airline, have been released.

    What is it?

The review was announced last year following growing concerns about the airline's finances and about the "lifeline" service to Alderney.

Members of the public have also raised concerns about the airline ending its Guernsey-Jersey service in March 2016.

The States agreed in November 2015 to pay off the airline's losses accrued between 2003 and 2014 totalling £19.9m with a further £5.3m set aside to cover expected losses up to 2017.

The review looked at issues including the future role of the airline, the length of the airport runways in Guernsey and Alderney, the airline's role in economics and the needs of the community.

Rebekah Le Gal from Mont Millais was driving her van down Tunnel Street near the Millennium Town Park last June when she hit Clinton Pringle, who was on holiday with his family in Jersey. He died from his injuries a few days later.

In the Royal Court today, the prosecution said Ms Le Gal hadn't been paying attention to signs in the area, including a No Entry and a Give Way sign. They said she hadn't noticed Clinton's mother and aunt screaming and waving as she approached him.

The court also heard she'd used her mobile phone behind the wheel to reply to a text from her son, in which he asked for his grandmother's phone number, shortly before the collision. The trial continues.

    Ben Chapple
    BBC News Online

The Strategic Review, external of Guernsey States-owned airline Aurigny has been released.

Two reports have been released as the panel of six was "unable to reach a consensus".

As a result the Policy and Resources Committee has made the following recommendations:

    • Aurigny to remain in States ownership for the foreseeable future due to the importance of retaining the Gatwick Airport slots
    • It is to retain its Air Operating Certificate
    • The airline is to be considered and treated as an "economic enabler" for the Bailiwick
    • Licensing system should change based on competition over servicing a route rather than for the right to compete on a route
    • The current shareholder objectives for the company are not fit-for-purpose and should be revised
    • As an essential economic enablement route, the Guernsey-London Gatwick route should be underpinned by a service level agreement
    • The Committee for Economic Development should provide the political leadership

    This includes:

    • Deciding upon the application of transparent public service agreements for "essential economic enablement routes"
    • Seek competitive tenders for those routes that will receive financial support from the States
    • This includes the Alderney-Guernsey and Alderney-Southampton where Aurigny should be the "operator of last resort for these routes"
    • Seek competitive tenders for the Guernsey-London City route

  19. Jersey needs to make discrimination law 'a priority'published at 09:59 British Summer Time 12 June 2017

    BBC Radio Jersey

Jersey needs to get its discrimination laws completed as a matter of priority. That's the view of the manager of the citizens advice charity.

    Malcolm Ferey

Malcolm Ferey says the organisation still gets complaints and questions from people on the subject of discrimination.

He said the island needed to catch up with other jurisdictions on the matter as it would improve the lives of people with disabilities.

Jersey is introducing discrimination legislation gradually. It started with racial discrimination and then extended it to cover age and sex discrimination. The final phase will see disability discrimination legislation later next year.
