    The States of Jersey has appointed two new Jerriais teachers to help preserve the island's native language.

    It is part of an increase in funding for L'Office du Jerriais of £110,000 in 2018 and 2019.

    A new strategy to celebrate and support people who look after elderly or infirm relatives is being launched today.

    It is estimated that one in seven people in Jersey perform such a caring role and that number is growing.

    The new strategy lays out five priority areas to improve conditions for those offering care which include giving people the chance for some good quality respite care, and improving access to training.

    James Le Feuvre of the charity MIND was involved in the developing the new strategy. He said it was important to support the vital unpaid work carers provide for family members and friends.

    Jersey's Citizens Advice charity saw a 25% cut in donations from the island parishes last year. The figure was revealed in its annual report.

    The annual grant the charity gets from Social Security also fell by £12,000 but overall they are in a stable financial position.

    The charity, which offers confidential free advice on a range of issues including housing and employment had an income of £352,730 last year with an expenditure of £312,470.

    The bulk of its income came from the health and social care department, with other revenue coming from the association of Jersey charities, the Lloyds Bank Foundation and donations including those from the parishes.

    Former Easternders star Jonny Labey will return to his home island of Jersey this summer to appear in the Battle of Flowers parade as the latest Mr Battle.

    He will appear alongside 17-year-old Evie Bertram who was crowned the 55th Miss Battle of Flowers earlier this year.

    Jonny Labey is a long term supporter of the Battle of Flowers having worked with the Grouville parish float for many years.

    In recent years Gareth Gates, Craig Philips, Ray Quinn, Marco Pierre White and Christopher Biggins have appeared in the parade as Mr Battle.

    Doctors in Guernsey have expressed concern over the way children and the elderly with mental health issues are cared for.

    Speaking to BBC Radio Guernsey, a number of GPs expressed concern over a lack of communication, a lack of integration, service gaps between primary and secondary care and that more time and energy needs to go into the mental health care of teenagers and younger children.

    The GPs who spoke to the BBC also said new legislation wa needed to stop employers discriminating against people with a history of mental health problems.

    Guernsey's Health and Social Care committee said it would release details of its mental health strategy once it had been accepted by the Police and Resources committee.
