    • 2006: States of Jersey Police begin a long-running covert investigation into child abuse
    • February 2011: Senator Francis Le Gresley lodges a proposition in the States Assembly demanding a public inquiry
    • March 2012: Victims of abuse are offered up to £60,000 compensation, without the need for a court hearing
    • March 2013: States Assembly unanimously agrees the framework for an independent inquiry into historical child abuse
    • July 2013: The inquiry is delayed when its chair, Sally Bradley QC, suffers a stroke. She is eventually replaced by Frances Oldham QC
    • 2014: The Independent Jersey Care Inquiry finally gets under way in July
    • February 2016: It is revealed the care inquiry will spend the full £23m allocated to it including contingency funding

  3. 'Tighter regulation' needed for drone industrypublished at 14:56 British Summer Time 3 July 2017

    The senior air traffic controller of Jersey Airport says the drone industry needs to be more highly regulated.

    It comes after the runway at Gatwick Airport had to be closed yesterday evening when a drone was spotted nearby. Four Easyjet flights and one British Airways service were diverted.

    Les Smallwood says drones can be very disruptive and potentially dangerous around airports. He said it was an increasing market and fairly unregulated.

    A report into decades of abuse in Jersey's care system will be published shortly after three years of hearings.

    Gifford Aubin was the first person to give evidence to the inquiry. He was a child at Haut de la Garenne in the 1950s and said he suffered mental and physical abuse as well as having meals withheld.

    The Independent Jersey Care Inquiry, led by UK judge Frances Oldham QC, included the testimony of hundreds of witnesses.

    It heard 553 offences took place between 1947 and 2004, with more than half said to have occurred at Haut de la Garenne children's home. The report is due to be released on the inquiry's website, external at 15:00 BST.

    Guernsey's entire roadwork is to be surveyed to get an idea of the overall state of repair.

    It's the first time it has happened since 2013.

    Over the next eight days Traffic and Highway Services will look at 260 miles of road surface across the island to get an idea of the amount of work required to bring it up to standard and the budget needed over the next five years.

    Traffic and Highway Services say it's a constant challenge to keep up with repairs especially with the high number of roads being dug up by utility companies.

    There's been criticism in the States that not enough is being spent on road maintenance. Senior manager Peter Falla says they're working hard to make taxpayers' money go further and the survey will help prioritise work in the most cost effective way.

    A 21-year-old man who grabbed a woman around her neck and pinned her down on a bed before lashing out at her with a leather belt has been jailed for 15 months, external.

    The Condor Rapide has returned to port in St Malo this afternoon following a fault with the starboard inner engine.

    The problem is now being investigated by the vessel's on-board engineering team.

    Guernsey's Heather Watson is scheduled to be last on Court Two at Wimbledon this afternoon as she takes on world number 119 Maryna Zanevska, from Belgium.

    Watson, 25, enjoyed a fine run at the Aegon International in Eastbourne last week, reaching the semi-fnials with wins over defending champion Dominika Cibulkova, 14th seed Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova and former Wimbledon quarter-finalist Barbora Strycova.

    The lawyer representing victims of abuse in Jersey's care system says he hopes there will be recommendations to stop it happening again.

    Jersey Football Association president Phil Austin says they will "not give up" in their bid to join Uefa after their case was heard by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) on Wednesday.

    Their application to become a member nation was rejected by Uefa last year, but Jersey believe their bid needs to at least be put to members at congress.

    "I'm surprised we've got so far down the line and we're certainly not going to give up now," Austin told BBC Radio Jersey.

    "It's going to be difficult for us. Gibraltar got in because CAS gave strong directions to the [Uefa] congress, to the membership, that they felt the application should be accepted.

    "Whether they do that for us I don't know - if they don't then it's going to be tough for us to get in because why should they allow another member in?"

    His comments come following a conference in Guernsey on Living to 100.

    Speakers highlighted how the Bailiwick is ideally placed to become a world leader in long and healthy lives.

    Guernsey's National Trust is hoping it's biggest fundraiser of the year will help with a major restoration project.

    The Viaer Marchi is a recreation of a Victorian market and takes place today in Saumarez Park.

    The trust's president Tony Spruce says money raised will help with the £200,000 conversion of the Fermain Tower into a holiday property.

    A car with a camera on top will be driving around the island this week checking out the quality of the roads.

    Traffic and Highway Services is trying to improve the quality of the roads. It says is getting harder due to the number of excavations for utility services.

    The survey will allow it to work out which roads need the most work and allocate money for maintenance over the next five years, the department says.

    The head of the Methodist Church in Jersey says the £23m cost of the care inquiry is money well spent.

    The findings of the independent inquiry into decades of abuse in Jersey's care system are due to be published today.

    Rev Graeme Halls said: "I think we need to trust the response to the inquiry and be reassured by our political leaders it won't be another report that finds itself in a cupboard somewhere."
