    Areas of Jersey's sea wall are being inspected to see if they need modifications to reduce the risk of flooding.

    Highways and Infrastructure staff will begin raising the sea wall at St Aubins Bay today but other areas could follow in future.

    Critics of plans to realign the L'Ancresse sea wall in Guernsey have lodged a "silent protest" over the plans.

    Ribbons of protest

    They have written messages on coloured ribbons and been tying them to one of the barriers blocking off the crumbling wall.

    Messages include "Keep the wall for future generations" and "Think before you act, don't waste the island's money".

    Politicians will debate the changes which include creating a beach backed by sand dunes in September. The plans could cost up to £1m.

    The Sark Folk Festival has been branded "brilliant" by people leaving the event as it drew to a close.

    It sold out again this year but won't be on next year as the organisers said they were taking a break after running it eight years in a row.

    BBC Radio Guernsey spoke to a number of people at the festival to see what they thought of the event.

    Comments ranged from "brilliant" from a first-time festival-goer, to "as usual, it is excellent" from a regular.

    Guernsey's most senior politician has expressed frustration at the failure of the UK Government to approve the laws needed for Guernsey to set up a register of business owners.

    Gavin St Pier expressed frustration as it emerged Guernsey was the only Crown Dependency not to set up a register of business owners.

    Jersey and the Isle of Man have met the deadline set by the UK Government but the Privy Council has failed to ratify Guernsey's laws.

    Guernsey's parliament approved a law in February which paved the way for the private register to be established, but it still needs approval by the council.

    Mr St Pier said it was "frustrating" to be put in this situation.

  8. Long pain management waiting lists 'caused by recruitment problems'published at 08:49

    A problem with recruitment is the main reason why there's a five-month waiting list for the Medical Specialist Group's pain management clinic, staff say.

    MSG consultant George Oswald said it's not the only area where there's been difficulty. He said paediatrics and orthopaedics had also previously suffered difficulties, but that these problems had been solved.

    Dr Oswald said recruitment was a problem facing all small jurisdictions.

    Work starts today to raise a section of the sea wall in Jersey along the promenade, near the Gunsite, to stop flooding.

    The work will take 14 weeks and the Department of Infrastructure said it was asking that people in the area exercise consideration during that time as pathways were to be narrowed.

    Highways manager Kevin Armstrong said they wanted to avoid accidents, so urged users to be aware of cyclists and pedestrians coming from both directions.

    Guernsey's Environment and Infrastructure Committee president, Barry Brehaut, has hit back at critics over plans for the sea wall at L'Ancresse, saying alternative proposals are not realistic.

    The committee want to spend about £1m realigning the wall to create a beach backed by sand dunes, but the level of spending has been criticized.

    Deputy Brehaut said people failed to understand the wall had no foundations and sat on sand. He added that some of the options being proposed by other members were "short-sighted" and could end up costing more.

    The issue has proved so contentious it's now going to be debated in the States in September.

    A three-year inquiry into widespread child abuse in Jersey's care system is due to reveal its findings later.

    The Independent Jersey Care Inquiry, led by UK judge Frances Oldham QC, included the testimony of hundreds of witnesses.

    The £23m inquiry heard hundreds of offences took place between 1947 and 2004, with more than half said to have occurred at Haut de la Garenne children's home.

    The report is due to be released on the inquiry's website, external at 15:00.
