Public meeting to discuss the L'Ancresse sea wall

Despite many voicing their opposition to plans to remove a section of the L'Ancresse sea wall, there was some support for environment's plans at last night's public meeting.

The committee wants a 130m (400ft) eastern section of the damaged anti-tank wall removed and to construct two rock armour groynes which it said would assist in developing a dune-backed beach.

Pat Devenport said it was good the States was looking to the future rather than continuing to conduct repairs.

"In another 50 years, our families are going to be sitting here saying why didn't they look ahead? Look what we've had to take on now?"

"We won't be thinking about South Africa on Saturday," coach MacRae told BBC Radio Jersey.

"Iron man is very different to what this distance is.

"I'm more of like an oil tanker compared to a speed boat.

"I've just got to try and get some speed back over the next four weeks and hopefully not embarrass myself."

    BBC Radio Guernsey

damage to the L'Ancresse sea wall

Many of the 150 islanders that attended yesterday evening's public meeting on the future of the L'Ancresse anti-tank wall expressed concern.

The environment committee wants a 130m (400ft) eastern section of the damaged wall removed and to construct two rock armour groynes, which it said would assist in developing a dune-backed beach.

But islanders are concerned about flooding, the cost of the project, and how it will affect the beach and losing some of Guernsey's heritage.

One of them was ex-States member Brian De Jersey who said he had "seen where millions of pounds have been overspent on projects".

"If they'd spent some of that money repairing not L'Ancresse Bay wall, but other places in the island, we wouldn't be where we are today," he said.

Deputy Le Pelley said feedback from parents he'd received suggested there was little appetite for larger schools.

Sark's chief fire officer is warning islanders about using disposable barbecues after his crew battled a huge blaze on cliffs for more than five hours.

Kevin Adams said it was likely the fire was started after a discarded barbecue set fire to scrub underneath it.

He said: "So many people think that because it's in tin foil it's protected. But it burns through, it scorches and then gets hot enough to catch, and that's it."

The island's entire fire crew helped tackle the blaze.

Jersey's war bunkers have suffered their "worst attack yet" by vandals according to the head of the Channel Islands Occupation Society.

Forty swastikas were sprayed on to Nazi World War Two bunkers at Noirmont, Corbiere, Les Landes and in St Ouen's.

Colin Isherwood, chairman of the society, said the symbol was "deeply offensive, especially for our German visitors", but the remote location of some of the bunkers made it "very difficult" to catch vandals "red handed".

Black and gold spray paint was used to deface the buildings, built in Jersey as part of Adolf Hitler's Atlantic wall fortification plans.

This is the second incident of its kind in the last two months, and Mr Isherwood said it was "unusual", and "seems to be the worst attack so far".

Jersey police are appealing for information.
