  1. Islands could be 'overlooked' in Brexit negotiationspublished at 13:17 British Summer Time 23 August 2017

    Union and EU flags

A Cambridge professor says the complex Brexit negotiations facing the UK government could lead to smaller regions, such as the Channel Islands, being overlooked.

The UK government has set out its position regarding trade between the Crown Dependencies and the UK, wanting guarantees that no new barriers or tariffs will be applied to goods already on sale in the European Union.

However Prof Catherine Barnard, an expert on European law, said concerns have already been raised about the level of consultation between devolved administrations and the UK government, and if their particular needs are being paid enough interest.

"There is concern that because the whole Brexit process is so large and so complicated, it will take time, it will take all the government's resource and the sad thing is that smaller regions may get overlooked in the process," she said.

  4. Deregulate Airbnb rules - Twitter reactionpublished at 12:20 British Summer Time 23 August 2017

A number of islanders have called for the States to reconsider its position on home sharing app Airbnb.

Under the 1948-98 Tourist (Guernsey) Laws all private dwellings housing paid visitors must have an annual boarding permit, issued by the Committee for Economic Development at a cost of £50.

The reminder comes after a recent 8.3% rise in staying leisure visitors in the three months to June, buoyed in part by the growing popularity of sites Airbnb, Owners Direct and Cottages Direct.

Many have called for the States to scrap the law:

It is believed a huge cliff fire on Sark's west coast was started by a disposable barbecue.

Sark's Chief Fire Officer Kevin Adams said it seemed likely the 250m by 150m blaze, which was still being dampened down today, was caused by the barbecue.

"Yesterday evening the wind was blowing from the south, and the barbecue was on the south side of where the flames started.

"So I would say it's probably that the discarded barbecue was too hot and it set fire through the tin foil, and to the scrub underneath."

"I don't know if we could ever prosecute because finding the person would be extremely difficult," he said.

  9. Pesticide amnesty after dog deathpublished at 10:40 British Summer Time 23 August 2017

    BBC Radio Jersey

A pesticide amnesty has been launched after a dog died from ingesting a substance banned in Jersey 15 years ago.

People are being asked to hand in any pesticides they no longer need, after the animal died after ingesting Phorate on a walk in the Beauport and Les Creux area in July.

The amnesty appeal comes from the Environment Department, which intends to safely dispose of any banned substances.

Dr Tim Du Feu, Director of Environmental Protection, said the dog's death appeared to be an isolated incident.

Sark's entire fire crew helped tackle a huge cliff blaze on the west coast of the island on Tuesday night.

It's thought the fire was caused by a disposable barbecue, half-a-mile south of the Pilcher Monument.

No-one was injured, and no properties damaged in the fire, which at one stage was 250m by 100m along an isolated stretch of coast.

Crews faced poor visibility and steep, inaccessible terrain, according to Chief Fire Officer Kevin Adams.

"There wasn't any fog to start with, it was just a big orange ball.

"We couldn't see the base of the fire, we had to scramble through about 50m of scrub to get close enough to find it to start with."

"It's taken a long time because of the terrain, we're not mountain goats unfortunately," Mr Adams said.

More than 3,000 gallons of water was used to tackle the fire last night. Sark's entire 15-strong crew was called to fight the blaze.

Firefighters are continuing to dampen down the site his morning.

  12. Secondary pension plans progressingpublished at 09:31 British Summer Time 23 August 2017

    Simon Fairclough
    Guernsey Political Reporter

Detailed plans for a secondary pension scheme into which islanders will be automatically enrolled will come before Guernsey's States next year. The scheme is being designed to encourage people to make greater pension savings.

In February 2016, the States discussed an outline proposal from the then Social Security Department for an auto-enrollment pension scheme, before approving such a scheme in principle. Detailed plans are now being worked up.

Potential pension providers are being invited to take part in the procurement process, following a market test which was completed in July.

President of the Committee for Employment and Social Security, Michelle Le Clerc, says this is to ensure that any potential supplier has the appropriate experience to provide the scheme on the scale expected.

If accepted, they will then be invited to tender to provide the pension service later in the year.

  14. Firefighters return to site of cliff blazepublished at 08:44 British Summer Time 23 August 2017

    Rob Byrne
    BBC News Online

Firefighters are returning to the site of a cliff fire on the west coast of Sark.

No-one was hurt in the blaze, but a crew fought flames for five hours into the early hours of this morning, according to Sark's Chief Fire Officer, Kevin Adams.

A resident called the fire service at 22:37 after seeing the fire, half a mile south of Pilcher Monument, from his bedroom window.

Mr Adams said most of the fire was on the cliff side which made extinguishing it "hazardous and difficult".

Not all areas of the fire, estimated to be 250m by 100m, could be reached as fog made visibility poor, he said, and the proximity to a steep cliff edge meant it was deemed too dangerous to dampen down all areas.

The cause of the fire is yet to be confirmed, but a discarded single use BBQ and empty wine bottle were found at the scene, Mr Adams said.

The fire service left the site at 03:30, and are returning to the scene this morning to check for any hotspots.

More than 150 islanders attended a public meeting on States plans for the east end of the L'Ancresse anti-tank wall.

The environment committee wants a 130m section of the damaged wall removed and to construct two rock armour groynes which would assist in developing a dune-backed beach.

Committee President Barry Brehaut got a frosty reception, with one person even calling for him to resign.

Many islanders are concerned about flooding, the cost of the project, and how it will affect the beach and losing some of Guernsey's heritage.

Others said the wall was a burden on the taxpayer, and were satisfied with the proposals set out by the committee.

Guernsey's politicians are expected to vote on the plans at a States meeting next month.
