  1. Top up fees would 'undermine' pre-school systempublished at 10:52 British Summer Time 25 September 2017

    BBC Radio Guernsey

Deputy Matt Fallaize, who pushed for universal pre-school education for all three and four year olds in Guernsey, says allowing top up fees would create a socially exclusive scheme.

It's after one of Guernsey's private pre-schools claimed they may not be financially viable to run in the future as a result of the States scheme and so should be allowed to charge top-up fees.

This is a scheme which is meant to exist for the benefit of children and it is essential that parents are able to access a wide range of providers. That will be undermined if some providers are able to charge more than others.

Thousands of people came to watch the competitors run, swim and ride. Organisers say it was the hard work of local helpers which made the event a success.

Jersey swimmer Sally Minty-Gravett says it was an inspirational weekend. She says it could prompt more people to take up the sport.

  11. Pre-School top-up funding 'should be resisted'published at 08:35 British Summer Time 25 September 2017

    BBC Radio Guernsey

A Guernsey politician who pushed for universal pre-school education for three and four year olds says the idea of top-up fees for providers should be strongly resisted.

The comments by Deputy Matt Fallaize were in response to Caroline Blondell of the Monkey Puzzle pre-school who says it might not be financially viable to operate for some of the pre-schools without a contribution from parents on top of the States grant.

The States introduced a free entitlement scheme at the start of the year, where children get 15 hours of free pre-school time. It's been running for two terms so far, and has been met with much enthusiasm.

However, Ms Blondell says a "top-up" scheme needs to be included in the provision to save the private industry from disappearing.

Deputy Fallaize says "If educational and social benefits are the criteria against which the scheme is to be judged - and they should be - there is no question that the scheme has already proved to be successful".

He says the scheme should be expanded and reviewed, not reversed.

  12. Sark businesses call for customs facility on islandpublished at 08:22 British Summer Time 25 September 2017

    BBC Radio Guernsey

Sark should set up a border control facility in the island so a direct ferry link to France can be set up. That's the view of the island's chamber of commerce.

    Sark

The group believes there is sufficient demand for a direct route from both ferry services and passengers and have called on the Chief Pleas to investigate.

Some operators are interested in providing the service but it can't happen without a customs facility. Currently people wanting to travel to and from Sark have to go via Jersey or Guernsey.
