A new team of park wardens are patrolling parks in St Helier to reinforce laws on the control of dogs and minimise antisocial behaviour.

    Parade Gardens

There were concerns raised at a recent parish rates assembly the parish appointed two wardens to make sure the town parks were well kept and orderly including keeping track of dogs off the lead.

It has always been against the law to let your dog off the lead in a park but Constable Simon Crowcroft says it hasn't always been well enforced.

He says the new wardens will enforce the rules, including fining people who break the rules of the park.

If the pup is sick, thin or injured members of the public are asked to call the charity immediately and be prepared to supply the following information:

    • Exact location; nearest population centre
    • Position on the beach, and state of the tide
    • How long the pup has been observed
    • Any disturbance or risk to it
    • Whether the mother has been seen
    • Any wounds or obvious signs of illness
    • Length, colour and condition
  5. Banned pesticide that killed dog 'degrades within a few weeks'published at 17:33 Greenwich Mean Time 20 November 2017

    Ben Chapple
    BBC News Online

The source of a banned pesticide confirmed to have caused the death of a dog should no longer be a threat, Jersey's Department of the Environment has said.

Although it did not find the source of the phorate in the Beauport/Les Creux area the pesticide "typically degrades within a few weeks of being applied or spilt".

A spokesman said: "Officers aren’t aware of other cases of phorate poisoning there or elsewhere."

However, the department has urged islanders to hand in any banned or out of date chemicals.

This was extremely sad for Cyrena-Clarke and her owners, and caused concern among dog owners who like to exercise their animals in the area. We don’t think there’s an ongoing risk, but it’s still worth reminding people that they should hand in any domestic or commercial chemicals that they think may be out of date or banned."

Willie Peggie, Director of the Environment

Anyone who wants to hand in chemicals or advice on their safe disposal should contact the environment department on 01534 441600 or email environmentenquiries@gov.je, external.

  8. 'Notable rise' in food bank use in Jersey says charitypublished at 16:51 Greenwich Mean Time 20 November 2017

    BBC Radio Jersey

A Catholic charity that organises food banks says a change in rents and a rise in food prices could be to blame for the increase in people seeking their help.

St Vincent de Paul says they have seen a notable increase in the number of people coming to them for food over the past few years.

Peter Farrell from the charity says things are getting worse for people on the verge of poverty.

In this past week we have seen 40 people which is a lot if you consider four years ago we would be seeing 12 or 13. I'm not sure what caused it but I think it could be the cost of food going up.

    Ben Chapple
    BBC News Online

A rescued seal pup was "extremely dehydrated" and a quarter of the weight a two-week should be according to Geoff George, a GSPCA Ambulance Driver who helped in its recovery.

"This is the earliest grey seal pup we have rescued in Guernsey as normally we see them in December and January," he said.

Steve Byrne, GSPCA manager, said: "We have been bracing ourselves, during the bad weather we have had, for an injured seal pup and today is the first we have rescued this year in Guernsey.

"The young pup is extremely thin and dehydrated we are doing all we can at the GSPCA to help Temperance.

"Seal pups are being born around our coast and it is always best not to get too close as you can scare the mother away."

  10. Warning of fine for letting dogs off the lead in St Helierpublished at 16:29 Greenwich Mean Time 20 November 2017

    Ryan Morrison
    BBC News Online

People walking their dogs on parks in St Helier could be fined if they aren't kept on leads, says a St Helier parish hall spokesman.

St Helier Constable Simon Crowcroft says there are patrols around parks and officers are telling people it is illegal to let dogs off the lead.

    Simon Crowcroft

Constable Crowcroft said: "If a dog is off the lead it can scare kids, it can cause a traffic accident and of course you can't supervise a dog's toilet activities if they are off the lead as easily as you can if they are on a lead."

He said the park keepers are not just looking out for dogs, they will be looking out for any antisocial behaviour.

Jersey Fire and Rescue Service say the dogs are thought to have been off the lead when they came across the sheep and have urged people to keep dogs on a lead near livestock.

There were eight sheep left on the cliff face this morning when the fire service resumed rescue operations with two thought to have fallen overnight.

Another two have since fallen to their deaths this morning.

Fire officers are attempting to bring one sheep back to the top of the cliff at a time.
