Three new aircraft hangars will be built at Jersey Airport after planning permission was approved by the States, according to Ports of Jersey.

The 21,500 sq ft (2,000 sq m) hangars are needed to fulfill "increasing demand" for space from both local and visiting aircraft, a spokesman said.

The hangars, to be located on the western part of the airfield, are due to be build by the Canadian company, Sprung.

Ports of Jersey said the design would be able to withstand harsh weather and would be "easily relocatable".

  5. 'No point' having two lifeboats in St Helierpublished at 12:53 Greenwich Mean Time 15 March 2018

    Rob England
    BBC News Online

In the midst of fresh rows over contrasting reports on the dispute between the RNLI and the former St Helier crew, a politician has said two vessels should not be deployed in St Helier harbour.

Deputy Steve Luce, who represents the States in the dispute, said a second lifeboat could be better deployed "somewhere else", if needed.

Currently the RNLI has the Tamar Class George Sullivan in the harbour, along with its inshore vessel, but the Jersey Lifeboat Association has recently put a deposit down on an older model Tyne class all-weather lifeboat.

The new RNLI St Helier crew, made up of St Catherine's volunteers and Jersey Fire and Rescue crew, is currently being trained on the all-weather vessel, with support from the UK, according to the RNLI.

Deputy Luce said: "I'm going to support whoever can provide the best lifeboat. I don't care who it is, I don't care what colour it is, I want the best lifeboat in Jersey that we can possibly have."

  9. Reduce migration policy proposed for Jerseypublished at 11:40 Greenwich Mean Time 15 March 2018

    BBC Radio Jersey

A policy aimed at regulating the number of people who can live and work in Jersey has been put forward by the chief minister.

The policy aims to reduce migration and the "long-term impact" it has on Jersey's public services, housing and infrastructure by being more selective about who can settle permanently in the island.

It says for there to be balance Jersey would need the number of people moving to the island over the next 20 years to be lower than it has been since 2001.

The 2001 census, external found 87,186 people living in Jersey, which rose to 97,857 in 2011, external.

    Rob England
    BBC News Online

A report commissioned by the States of Jersey into a row between the RNLI and the former St Helier crew "lacks credibility", according to the Jersey Lifeboat Association.

The leaked document, compiled by Guernsey's harbour master Chad Murray, found the RNLI failed to supervise the St Helier Station, leaving former coxswain Andy Hibbs to make decisions.

The report was commissioned to inform States members before an upcoming debate, external on the future of lifeboat services in Jersey - and suggests politicians support the RNLI, as opposed to the new charity.

The Perchard report , externalclaims a "historical rift," between members of the St Helier and St Cathrine's RNLI stations caused a "breakdown in trust".

People "shouldn't approach" dolphins stranded on beaches according to the British Divers Marine Life Rescue.

Coordinator Donna de Gruchy said an ill dolphin has been attempting to strand itself all week in Jersey but had been put back into the sea by "well meaning members of the public" before a vet could arrive.

She said dolphins can carry disease that can harm humans and the animals can also thrash out in panic so people should not approach them.

She added they should call the JSPCA as soon as possible and give details of the location if they see a stranded dolphin.

  18. Deputy should stay out of lifeboat issue - charity sayspublished at 09:15 Greenwich Mean Time 15 March 2018

    Rob England
    BBC News Online

A Jersey deputy should "stand aside" from ongoing issues with Jersey's lifeboats, a charity has said.

The Jersey Lifeboat Association (JLA) has accused Deputy Steve Luce of being "conflicted" after he endorsed a report which examined last year's row between the former St Helier lifeboat crew and the RNLI.

The report was compiled by Guernsey's harbour master Chad Murray and criticised the RNLI for failing to supervise the St Helier station, which left former coxswain Andy Hibbs to make decisions for the crew which were "not in line with the charities policies".

But the JLA says Deputy Luce - a former member of the RNLI St Catherine's crew - was "conflicted" over the issue, and should step aside.

The deputy, who was put forward to represent the States in the row due to his previous lifeboat service, has previously defended his involvement in the dispute. Earlier he told BBC Radio Jersey his accusers were "missing the point", and as an experienced lifeboatman his "overwhelming priority" was saving lives at sea.
