    "And then there was the Cuban Missile Crisis, the 13-day standoff that brought the world to the edge of nuclear war," says the BBC's David Willis in Washington DC.

    "This is a man who was a thorn in the side to countless American presidents. A man whose legacy will be very mixed."

    As exiles, he says: "The enormous majority of the US Cuban community feels very against Castro. It's a very strong reaction against the life of Fidel Castro. 

    "When the USSR collapsed, it was a moment in which Cubans faced a lot of hardship in their lives and in recent years Cuba has looked for support elsewhere. 

    "Many people were saying on the radio now, with Fidel Castro gone, Cuba may see the changes they have been asking for."

    The BBC's Will Grant in Havana says that despite Castro's advanced age and ailing health, news of his death still came as a surprise for many people.

    "He has been so much of their lives for so long, that they are almost struggling to imagine what life will be like without him."

    "What will be interesting, as we look back at his life and legacy is to try and capture a sense of how key and crucial he was to this nation.

    "I don't think are many other comparative figures anywhere else in the world, not today."
