  3. Hamas leaders targeted in air strikespublished at 12:34 British Summer Time 16 May 2021

The Israeli airforce says it has struck "military assets in Hamas's intelligence HQ in northern Gaza".

It comes after overnight air strikes targeted the home of Hamas's political and military leader in Gaza, Yehiya Sinwar, and the home of his brother too. It has not been confirmed if they were there at the time - but senior Hamas leaders have reportedly gone into hiding in Gaza.

Israeli media report that two other Hamas military figures have also been targeted, including the head of the Zeitoun battalion.

  5. Fact-checking the conflict onlinepublished at 11:43 British Summer Time 16 May 2021

Misleading or false claims have been widely shared online as the conflict has escalated in the past week.

The BBC Monitoring team, who analyse news around the world, have been looking into material from both sides.

This example below was shared by social media influencers, and was said to show a fake funeral ceremony in Gaza. But the same video was posted last year in Jordan.

Then there's this genuine video, shared by some pro-Palestinian users, who claimed it showed al-Aqsa mosque in East Jerusalem on fire and accused Israel of letting it burn.

In truth it was a tree near the mosque that had caught fire, not the mosque itself. The fire was put out and the mosque was not damaged. The cause of the fire is disputed.

  6. UN Security Council to meet at 14:00 GMTpublished at 11:24 British Summer Time 16 May 2021

The UN Security Council is due to meet this afternoon at 14:00 GMT (that's 15:00 UK time), to discuss the Israel-Palestinian conflict.

The surge in fighting is the worst there since 2014. But attempts at a diplomatic resolution are complicated by the status of Hamas. The militant Islamist group, which administrates the Gaza Strip, is designated as a terrorist group - either as a whole or its military wing - by Israel, the United States, the European Union, the UK and other powers.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said yesterday he was "dismayed" by civilian casualties in Gaza and "deeply disturbed" by Israel's attack on the high-rise building housing foreign media organisations.

In a statement, the UN reminded all sides that "any indiscriminate targeting of civilian and media structures violates international law and must be avoided at all costs".

  7. New base offered to foreign media after Israeli air strikepublished at 11:10 British Summer Time 16 May 2021

News agency Agence France Presse says its Gaza offices will house teams from fellow news outlets the Associated Press and Al Jazeera, whose base was destroyed yesterday in an Israeli air strike. The decision was reported, external by the agency's Middle East and North Africa director Sylvain Estibal.

Israel's military gave journalists an hour to leave the tower block, which also contained several floors of residential apartments. That was not enough time for them to save their media archives. The Israel Defense Forces said Hamas had used the building for intelligence and making weapons - a claim denied by the building's landlord.

In an Associated Press blog, external, head of media relations Lauren Easton said AP had been in the building for 15 years and called on the Israeli government to give evidence of its allegations.

This is the moment the Gaza high-rise block was destroyed.

  8. More rockets land in southern Israelpublished at 10:58 British Summer Time 16 May 2021

Towns and cities in southern Israel have come under fire this morning too, not far from the Gaza Strip.

Rocket sirens are sounding throughout the border region, including in Sderot, Gavim, Nir Am, Ibim and Mefalsim, Israeli media report.

Here's the damage from one of two rockets that landed in the middle of a street in Netivot, a city east of Gaza. Initial reports suggest no one was injured there.

We reported earlier that many of the rockets targeting the city of Ashdod overnight were destroyed by Israel's Iron Dome defence system.

How does it work? Well, as this graphic shows it relies on radar to identify and destroy incoming threats before they can cause damage. You can find out more about it here.

Gaza was hit by Israeli air strikes early on Sunday. It appears to have been the deadliest Israeli action of its kind so far.

Health officials in Gaza say 26 people died in attacks just before dawn, including eight children. Most of those killed were reportedly from the same family.

It brings to 174 the number of people reported dead in Gaza since the conflict began a week ago. Israel has reported 10 deaths.

Dozens were also wounded in this morning's air strikes, health officials say, and rescue workers are searching the debris for survivors.

"We’re hearing screams under the rubble," a member of Gaza’s Civil Defense organization told news channel Al-Jazeera.

Among those killed was Ayman Abu al-Ouf, a doctor at al-Shifa hospital. Meanwhile the Israel Defense Forces have released a video which they say shows pilots calling off an air strike because of children in the area.

  10. Recap: What caused the current violence?published at 10:32 British Summer Time 16 May 2021

Seven days after the latest bloodshed began, here's a reminder of how it started

The fighting between Israel and Hamas was triggered by days of escalating clashes between Palestinians and Israeli police at a holy hilltop compound in East Jerusalem.

The site is revered by both Muslims, who call it the Haram al-Sharif (Noble Sanctuary), and Jews, for whom it is known as the Temple Mount. Hamas demanded Israel remove police from there and the nearby predominantly Arab district of Sheikh Jarrah, where Palestinian families face eviction by Jewish settlers. Hamas launched rockets when its ultimatum went unheeded.

Palestinian anger had already been stoked by weeks of rising tension in East Jerusalem, inflamed by a series of confrontations with police since the start of the Islamic holy month of Ramadan in mid-April.

A BBC map showing the location of sites including al-Aqsa mosque and the Dome of the Rock

It was further fuelled by the threatened eviction of Palestinian families from their homes in East Jerusalem by Jewish settlers and Israel's annual celebration of its capture of East Jerusalem in the 1967 Middle East war, known as Jerusalem Day.

The fate of the city, with its deep religious and national significance to both sides, lies at the heart of the decades-old Israel-Palestinian conflict. Israel in effect annexed East Jerusalem in 1980 and considers the entire city its capital, though this is not recognised by the vast majority of other countries.

Palestinians claim the eastern half of Jerusalem as the capital of a hoped-for state of their own.

  11. Israel security cabinet meetspublished at 10:11 British Summer Time 16 May 2021

Israel’s security cabinet has been meeting to discuss its next steps, amid growing international calls for a ceasefire with Hamas, the Palestinian militant group that rules the Gaza Strip.

The cabinet is a committee of ministers with the power to make decisions about military action. Israeli media suggest some members intend to call for a swift end to hostilities.

Defence officials have warned that continued violence could draw Israel into a wider conflict, with further casualties and the risk of a ground offensive.

  12. US president rings Netanyahu and Abbaspublished at 09:57 British Summer Time 16 May 2021

Two days after his Middle East envoy Hady Amr arrived for talks in Israel, President Joe Biden has phoned Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.

The US regards Hamas as a terrorist organisation, so will not talk to leaders in Gaza. As Mr Abbas is based in the occupied West Bank and has no sway over the running of the Gaza Strip, that makes any prospect of US mediation difficult.

Mr Biden told the Israeli leader that he supported Israel's right to self-defence but expressed concern over fatalities on both sides.

Israel destroyed a high-rise block in Gaza on Saturday that housed foreign media organisations including the Associated Press and Al-Jazeera, claiming that Hamas military intelligence was operating there. The building's landlord has denied that, and the news organisations said they had no knowledge of such a connection.

"This is something we actively check to the best of our ability," AP President and CEO Gary Pruitt said in a statement, external. "We would never knowingly put our journalists at risk."

An evacuation warning was issued before the strike.

Mr Biden called for journalists to be protected and also told President Abbas he was committed to "strengthening the US-Palestinian partnership".

  13. Israeli cities targeted by Hamas rocketspublished at 09:42 British Summer Time 16 May 2021

It was another night of sirens and rocket barrages in towns and cities across central and southern Israel overnight. Some 130 rockets were fired, according to Israel's military, and more were reported on Sunday morning.

Israeli reports say a number of people were hurt trying to reach bomb shelters, but nobody was injured by the rockets themselves.

Among the cities targeted in a midnight barrage were Ashdod and Beersheba in the south. This was the scene over Ashdod where the military's Iron Dome can be seen intercepting rockets.

The Hamas-run Palestinian health ministry in Gaza says 26 people were killed and dozens wounded in Israeli air strikes early today. Among the targets overnight was the home of Hamas's political and military leader in Gaza, Yehiya Sinwar, in Khan Yunis.

Sinwar was released from an Israeli prison in 2011. The Israel Defence Forces said both his home and that of his brother Muhammed are used as "terror infrastructure". Other Hamas officials were also targeted. It is not clear whether any of the Hamas leaders were at home at the time.

Pictures from the ground in Gaza City this morning show rescuers searching for the wounded and recovering bodies, including at least one young girl. Palestinian reports say one of those killed in the latest strikes is Dr Ayman Abu al-Ouf, head of the Department of Internal Medicine at Gaza's Alshifa hospital.
