  2. Israel showing restraint in Gaza, ex-IDF general sayspublished at 19:46 British Summer Time 15 May 2021

Retired Brig-Gen Assaf Orion, a former head of strategy for the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) General Staff, has told the BBC that, despite the civilian casualties in Gaza, the IDF has shown restraint in its response to rockets fired towards Israel by the Palestinian militant group Hamas.

    Quote Message

If we had Israel fighting by the war crimes strategy of Hamas, using its full power unrestrained, by the same moral values, we would have seen carpet bombing and thousands of civilian deaths.

    Quote Message

We actually see that after many, many hundreds [of] munitions, precision strikes, there are about 100 or more, which are regrettable, dead, but including inside dozens and dozens [of] Hamas combatants.

Palestinian militants in the Gaza Strip have fired 278 rockets into Israel since 07:00 local time (04:00 GMT) on Saturday, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) say.

Forty of those rockets failed to launch properly and landed inside Gaza, according to a statement.

The IDF also says "many dozens" of rockets that crossed into Israel were intercepted by the Iron Dome defence system, but it did not give a precise number.

As we reported earlier, one person was killed near the Israeli city of Tel Aviv when a rocket struck a residential building.

  4. Netanyahu tells Biden that Israel 'seeks to avoid harming civilians'published at 19:14 British Summer Time 15 May 2021

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has spoken on the phone with US President Joe Biden, telling him that Israel "is doing everything to avoid harming innocent civilians".

The call followed an Israeli air strike that demolished a tower block housing international media in the Gaza Strip.

Netanyahu's office stressed that the tower block contained "terror targets" and that the occupants were given time to evacuate.

Netanyahu also thanked Biden for the “unwavering support” of the US for Israel’s right to defend itself, his office said.

Biden earlier had a phone call with Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas, with Abbas's spokesman quoted by AFP news agency as saying the conversation was "important".

The spokesman provided no further details.

  5. Israel 'can't talk to Hamas about peace'published at 18:46 British Summer Time 15 May 2021

In a BBC interview, Mark Regev, a senior adviser to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanhyahu, has defended Israel's actions in Gaza.

"I don't want to see any innocent bystanders hurt, let alone children. I don't want to see Israeli children or Palestinian children caught up in the crossfire," Regev told BBC World TV.

"But if you use the example of 2014 [when Israel launched a ground offensive in Gaza in response to Palestinian rocket-fire], it's after that conflict we did achieve a sustained period of quiet. As long as Hamas is stuck in its very, very radical extremist agenda, you can't talk to them about peace.

"We've negotiated in the past with the Palestinian government, and, hopefully will be negotiating with them in the future.

"But Hamas says Israel has no right to exist. So, we're only talking about deterrence, about strength, about them understanding that it's not in their interest to shoot rockets into Israel.

"And we want to come out of this conflict with them understanding that clearly, and then have a sustained period of quiet. Ultimately, that's good for Israelis, and that's good for the residents of Gaza, too," Regev added.

The Qatar-based Al Jazeera television network has also condemned Israel's bombing of the Gaza tower block where it had offices.

In a statement, it said it viewed the move as "as a clear act to stop journalists from conducting their sacred duty to inform the world and report events on the ground".

"Al Jazeera promises to pursue every available route to hold the Israeli government responsible for its actions."

Residents and occupants of the building were informed by the Israeli army by phone that they had less than one hour to vacate the building, it added.

Dr Mostefa Souag, acting director general of Al Jazeera Media Network, said:

    Quote Message

We call on the international community to condemn such barbaric actions and targeting of journalists, and we demand an immediate international action to hold Israel accountable for its deliberate targeting of journalists and the media institutions.

Israeli Defence Minister Benny Gantz has said Israel is not seeking an escalation with Palestinians in West Bank.

"I want to convey a message to the Palestinians in Judea and Samaria - the state of Israel has no interest in an escalation in Judea and Samaria, but is ready for any scenario," he said, using the biblical name for the West Bank, after meeting with senior Israel Defence Forces officers.

"In Gaza, the residents are suffering because of the Hamas rule, while the Palestinians in Judea and Samaria can enjoy the calm and stable economy."

About Gaza, he said: "We exacted a very heavy price from Hamas over the past day”, adding Israel had additional plans to restore "peace and stability", Israeli media report.

  9. Hamas managed to unite Palestinians, Israeli columnist sayspublished at 17:18 British Summer Time 15 May 2021

    Akiva Eldar
    Image caption,

"The question is not just a military one," says Akiva Eldar

Akiva Eldar, a columnist for the online media outlet covering the Middle East Al Monitor in Jerusalem, has told the BBC how he sees the conflict unfolding over the coming days and weeks.

    Quote Message

The question is not just a military one, how do you finish attacking Gaza, striking Gaza, dropping more bombs.

    Quote Message

I think it's now a question [of] who will get a victory image. It seems that the Israeli decision makers are happy with the images of the Hamas tunnels being bombed and the number of Hamas activists being eliminated

    Quote Message

For Hamas I think, the victory image is what's happening in Israel proper. They have managed to do what all Arab countries and the PLO [Palestinian Liberation Organization] headed by legendary Yasser Arafat have not managed to do, which is to unite the Palestinians in Israel, the West Bank, Gaza and around the world against Israel.

    Quote Message

They have managed to send Israelis to shelter and to hide for almost a week, and we're talking now about an attrition war.

Elsewhere around Europe, people have also been marching in support of Palestinians.

Riot police in Paris have used water cannon and tear gas to try to disperse thousands of demonstrators protesting in defiance of coronavirus restrictions.

The march had been banned by police and at the request of Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin, with authorities saying they wanted to avoid a flare-up of violence.

Hundreds more people also took to the streets in authorised protests in other cities, including Lyon and Marseille, which took place peacefully.

In Madrid, a few thousand people rallied in the city centre while in Berlin, protesters threw bottles and stones at police. Coronavirus restrictions were broken, prompting officers to break up one of the protests.

The landlord of the tower block destroyed by an Israel air strike on Saturday has denied there was any military presence in the building, the BBC's Rushdi Abualouf reports from Gaza.

An earlier Israeli statement said the tower had been housing "military assets" belonging to the intelligence offices of Hamas - the militant Islamist group that runs the Gaza Strip.

But the landlord told reporters that the building had only contained the offices of media organisations and other businesses as well as about 60 residential apartments.

The tower was the biggest building in Gaza destroyed by Israel so far, our correspondent adds. Al Jazeera and the Associated Press both had offices in the building, which was evacuated before it was destroyed.

Austria says Iran's foreign minister has cancelled a planned visit after the Israeli flag was flown from government buildings in Vienna.

Mohammad Javad Zarif had been due to hold talks with his counterpart, Alexander Schallenberg, but had called off the trip, Schallenberg's spokeswoman said.

"We regret this and take note of it, but for us it is as clear as day that when Hamas fires more than 2,000 rockets at civilian targets in Israel then we will not remain silent," the spokeswoman added.

On Saturday, Iran said Zarif had "deemed the trip as inexpedient", the semi-official Isna news agency reported.

Austrian Chancellor Sebastian Kurz said on Friday that flying the Israeli flag above the federal chancellery was a show of solidarity with Israel during the current outbreak of violence. Zarif's deputy, Abbas Araqchi, criticised the move.

  13. US tells Israel to ensure safety of journalists after strikepublished at 16:07 British Summer Time 15 May 2021
    Breaking

White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki has just tweeted: "We have communicated directly to the Israelis that ensuring the safety and security of journalists and independent media is a paramount responsibility."

Occupants of the building in Gaza, which housed offices of foreign media outlets, were given a warning by the Israeli military to evacuate the tower, and there are no reports of casualties.

  14. AP reacts to Israeli strike: Shocked and horrifiedpublished at 15:50 British Summer Time 15 May 2021

The tower in Gaza destroyed by the Israeli air strike also housed the offices of the Associated Press (AP) news agency. Here's a statement from its president and CEO, Gary Pruitt:

    Quote Message

We are shocked and horrified that the Israeli military would target and destroy the building housing AP’s bureau and other news organizations in Gaza. They have long known the location of our bureau and knew journalists were there. We received a warning that the building would be hit.

    Quote Message

We are seeking information from the Israeli government and are engaged with the US State Department to try to learn more.

    Quote Message

This is an incredibly disturbing development. We narrowly avoided a terrible loss of life. A dozen AP journalists and freelancers were inside the building and thankfully we were able to evacuate them in time.

    Quote Message

The world will know less about what is happening in Gaza because of what happened today.

Before the building was hit, AP's Gaza correspondent Fares Akram tweeted about the impending bombing:, external "And now bombs could fall on our office. We ran down the stairs from the 11th floor and now looking at the building from afar, praying Israeli army would eventually retract."

From the outset it's been clear how high passions are running amongst the thousands who have turned out in central London.

A river of protesters flowed along Hyde Park towards the Israeli embassy in Kensington. Every once in a while a red or green smoke flare was set off, met with cheers and waving Palestinian flags which match the colours.

Their planned destination was in fact sealed off down a private road, but that didn't stop people chanting "Free Palestine" and a minority climbed scaffolding on Kensington High Street.

They essentially want Israel to stop air strikes and for the UK government to step in. But as US negotiators call on both sides to calm the situation - few here think it will be resolved any time soon.

In a phone call with the officer, AFP heard him beg for an extra 10 minutes to allow journalists to retrieve their equipment before leaving. "Give us 10 extra minutes," he urged, but the officer on the other end of the line refused.

Across the occupied West Bank, Palestinians are gathering to commemorate what they call al-Nakba, the Catastrophe.

It marks the displacement of some 700,000 Palestinians, who were forced or driven from their homes in the Arab-Israeli war which began the day after Israel's declaration of independence in 1948.

Neither they nor their descendants have been allowed by Israel to return. There are around five million Palestinians currently recognised as refugees by the UN. Most live in Jordan, followed by the Gaza Strip, West Bank, Syria, Lebanon and East Jerusalem.

The main protest today is being held in the West Bank city of Ramallah, where the Palestinian Authority is based. Demonstrations are being held in several other countries around the world as well.

On Friday, 11 Palestinians were killed in clashes with Israeli security forces across the West Bank and East Jerusalem.
