  14. Dead bodies of Hamas fighters still lying on the groundpublished at 10:56 British Summer Time 9 October 2023

    Jonathan Beale
Reporting from southern Israel, near Gaza

We saw dead bodies of Hamas fighters still lying on the ground - left to rot - unlike their Israeli victims who’ve long ago been taken away for identification and burial.

We watched as one Israeli driver stopped his truck so he could pick up a rock to throw at the corpse of one dead Hamas fighter. Anger erupted on both sides of the border.

While Israel’s well equipped and trained troops tries to eradicate the remnants of those militants who carried out the raid, Hamas continues to fire scores of rockets over the border - by day and night.

Israel’s sophisticated air defences - the so called Iron Dome - has been working overtime. It’s unable to intercept every rocket fired from Gaza.

The clear up operation at times sounds more like a full scale military operation - with Israeli jets constantly flying overhead and striking hundreds of targets inside Gaza.

But Israel is clearly planning much more. Tanks, troops and armoured vehicles are massing near Gaza’s border. It looks like preparations for a potential major military operation into Gaza itself.
