We are shortly going to be pausing our coverage of the Israel and Gaza conflict. But, before we do here is a quick recap of the key points from the last few hours:

    • Israel's military says 13 Israelis, including six women and seven children, held hostage in Gaza who were earlier handed to the Red Cross on Saturday evening are now in Israel
    • The release was delayed by several hours after Hamas accused Israel of breaching its part of the four-day truce agreement - an accusation Israel denied
    • The former hostages are being accompanied by special forces and will undergo initial medical assessments and will then be reunited with their families
    • Four Thai nationals have also been released
    • Saturday was the second day captives were freed under the deal which has been brokered by Qatar
    • Israeli authorities say 195 hostages are still being held in Gaza
    • As part of the hostage deal, Israel confirmed it has released a further 39 Palestinian prisoners
    • Authorities say they were freed from three different Israeli jails, adding all of them were either women or minors aged 18 or under
    • The 39 are being returned to their homes in East Jerusalem or the occupied West Bank

Palestinian prisoner Nourhan Awad, 23, ran into the arms of her family in Qalandia, West Bank, when she was freed.

Awad was arrested in 2015 and shot with three bullets as she was suspected of being part of a stabbing operation in Jerusalem.

She was sentenced to 10 years in jail, of which she served eight years.

Awad refused to go home last night before visiting the grave of her cousin who was shot dead by an Israeli soldier on the day Awad was arrested.

Palestinian woman Israa Jaabis, 38, hugged her son Mua’tassim after being released

Israa Jaabis is one of the Palestinian women freed on Saturday as part of a swap deal between Hamas and Israel.

She had been imprisoned in Israel since 2015 after her car broke down on a highway 1.5km (0.9 miles) from a checkpoint in the West Bank.

The reason for the breakdown is disputed. Israelis said back then it was an attempted car bombing but Arab media said the engine of her car failed causing a fire.

Jaabis sustained fire injuries in the accident and her face was badly burnt.

She was sentenced to 11 years in jail, of which she spent eight years before she was released.

Last year, Jaabis filed a request with the Israel Prisons Service for a nose job to repair the damage to her face, and was rejected.

Jaabis, 38, hugged her son Mua’tassim, now 15, whom she left when he was just eight years old.

  7. Joy of release tempered by grim realitypublished at 00:57 Greenwich Mean Time 26 November 2023

    Lucy Manning
    BBC News Special Correspondent

The joy of the hostages' release is tempered by the reality many of them face with relatives killed or still held hostage.

The Deputy Mayor of Jerusalem, Fleur Hassan-Nahoum tweeted: “The sick psychological terror of Hamas: after hours of delay, a girl released without her mother, a sister released without her brother who is 18 years old and fits the criteria, and two children whose mother was murdered released without their father, their only family.”

The released hostages listed above are 13-year-old Hila Rotem Shoshani, whose mother Raya has not been released. Maya Regev’s brother Itai is still a hostage. 16-year-old Noam and 13-year-old Alma Or have been freed but their father Dror is still a hostage and their mother Yonat was murdered.

    Others are also affected.

Adi Shoham and her children Naveh and Yahel are free but Tal Shoham, their husband and father, is still being held.

Shiri Weiss and her daughter Noga were freed but Shiri’s husband is thought to be held and other relatives were killed.

Shoshan Haran is now free but her husband and sister were murdered.

A fragile deal, but both sides want to show strengthpublished at 00:41 Greenwich Mean Time 26 November 2023

    Lucy Williamson
    reporting from the West Bank

Israel released the second group of Palestinian prisoners here tonight. They crossed over the Beitunia checkpoint in the West Bank to be greeted again by crowds of supporters and family members waiting out all the delays and uncertainties.

What was striking tonight, though, was the number of green Hamas flags which have really multiplied compared to last night.

Really big flags being carried by supporters, cars adorned with them and young men with the Hamas headbands tied around their foreheads.

There is a real sense Hamas wants to put its mark on this deal and to stand face-to-face with the Israeli forces at that checkpoint just a short distance from the prison complex run by Israel.

But, there was a show of force from Israeli troops as well tonight.

Last night the crowd surrounded vehicles as they crossed over the checkpoint - both the Red Cross vehicle and the bus carrying the Palestinian prisoners bringing them to a halt.

Tonight Israeli forces fired tear gas to try to clear the road in advance of the bus arriving and also used bulldozers to clear all the cars from the area.

This deal may have looked fragile at times but both sides here want to show their strength.

Maya Regev, 21, is one of three Israeli hostages released alone on Saturday.

Her brother, Itay, was also captured by Hamas on 7 October at the Supernova music festival and is thought to still be in captivity.

On the morning of 7 October, Maya's father got a call from his daughter who screamed: "Dad they're shooting at me, I'm dead."

The family said they later spotted Itay in handcuffs in the back of a vehicle in a video released by Hamas.

Almost two days later, the Israeli army informed the family that both Maya and Itay had been abducted.

Emily Hand has been emblematic of the terrible ordeal the hostages and their families have faced.

The nine-year-old Irish-Israeli girl held without any of her family with her.

Her dad Thomas Hand spoke at a press conference in London on Monday, sobbing as he said he was sure his daughter would be asking every day: "Where's my daddy, why didn't he come to save me?"

Thomas didn’t give up his campaigning, flying around the world with his message that Emily must be freed. He had originally been told she had been killed and said he was at least pleased she wasn’t being held in Gaza. But then he was told she was a hostage and he said getting her back was now his reason for living.

She turned nine while being held by Hamas so she will now finally be able to celebrate her birthday with her dad.

He said he realised it would take a long time to fix the mental trauma his little girl will have suffered.
