Israel Defense Forces (IDF) spokesman Daniel Hagari holds a news conference about the hostage release effort

More now on the news conference with IDF spokesman Daniel Hagari.

He told people to be patient and said they are making “progress” after the delay today.

That tallies with what Qatar and the Egyptians have been saying, and what we're hearing from the Palestinian side.

It seems they are confident the handover of hostages by Hamas will take place tonight as scheduled, albeit hours after the agreed time.

He said it was a complex process and that people shouldn’t expect these things to happen simply.

Hagari was asked what he knew about the delay and whether it was true as Hamas claimed that fewer than 70 aid lorries were let into the north of Gaza, in breach of the deal.

He said it wasn’t up to the IDF to determine how many trucks go north - he insisted Israel stuck to what was agreed and that it was the UN and aid agencies that do the actual transfer to the north.

But it seems we've got to a point now where all the sides are confident the hostage handover and prisoner release is going to happen tonight.

A total of 340 vehicles filled with humanitarian aid have entered the Gaza strip since the ceasefire began on Friday, a spokesperson for Hamas said.

Just 65 of those vehicles reached northern Gaza, which "is less than half of what Israel agreed on", Osama Hamdan claimed earlier on Saturday.

The dispute threatened to derail plans to exchange 39 Palestinian prisoners for 20 hostages being held by Hamas.

However, the plan will now go ahead later this evening after "obstacles were overcome through Qatari-Egyptian communications with both sides", a Qatari official said.

Official spokesperson for Qatar’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Dr Majed Al-Ansari, says the "obstacles were overcome" and several hostages will be released tonight, following an earlier delay.

He said: "After a delay in implementing the release of prisoners from both sides, the obstacles were overcome through Qatari-Egyptian communications with both sides.

"Tonight 39 Palestinian women and children will be released in exchange for the release of 13 Israeli hostages from Gaza."

He said this will be in addition to the release of a further seven civilians, which is separate to the temporary truce agreement deal.

  13. Hamas says it delayed releasing 13 hostages until mediators respondpublished at 18:49 Greenwich Mean Time 25 November 2023

Hamas spokesperson Osama Hamdan says he believes Israelis "are not responding in the right and positive way" since the temporary ceasefire began on Friday.

He says Hamas has "called upon the mediators to make the needed efforts to fulfil all what has (been) agreed upon... like allowing the trucks of aid to reach the northern part of Gaza".

He went on to say Hamas believes that "the Israelis are manipulating the issue" on the release of Palestinian detainees, adding "we will stand against that".

On Israeli hostages being held in Gaza, he said the armed wing of Hamas "postponed releasing the second 13 captives in order to hear the response from the mediators", and until the truce agreement is fulfilled.

Israel has denied violating the agreement.

Hamdan said a total of 340 aid trucks were sent into Gaza since Friday, but only only 65 reached northern Gaza - which he added was less than half of what Israel agreed on.

He added: "We affirm our commitment to the agreement sponsored by Egypt and Qatar."

  15. Tens of thousands attend London protest marchpublished at 18:11 Greenwich Mean Time 25 November 2023

    Simon Jones
    Reporting from central London

Tens of thousands of pro-Palestinian protesters have once again taken to the streets of central London, marching from Park Lane to Westminster, demanding a permanent ceasefire in the conflict.

Many are draped in flags, chanting "Free Palestine". Emotions are running high, with few believing the temporary truce will turn into anything longer lasting.

There is a big police presence along the route of the demonstration - with some officers handing out leaflets warning that support for Hamas or hatred towards any religion will not be tolerated.

The organisers of the march told me they didn’t think that was necessary, saying they had already made it clear that they stood against racism in all its forms.

The Met says two people were arrested for supporting a proscribed organisation and four people staffing a stall distributing literature featuring a swastika inside a Star of David have been arrested on suspicion of inciting racial hatred.

    Rushdi Abu Alouf
    BBC News

The Hamas official, speaking to the BBC, also said that Israel made significant changes to the agreed list of Palestinian prisoners to be released.

He also claimed that the Israel Defense Forces killed two Palestinians in Beit Hanoun in Gaza, in an area where Palestinians are allowed to move.

  18. Hamas official: Israel blocked aid trucks and flew drones over south Gazapublished at 17:04 Greenwich Mean Time 25 November 2023
    Breaking

    Rushdi Abu Alouf
    BBC News

A senior Hamas official has told the BBC that the delay to the handover of the hostages this evening is due to Israeli violations of the humanitarian truce agreement by preventing agreed-upon aid trucks from entering northern Gaza.

He said that Israel allowed only three trucks out of 100 to reach northern Gaza.

He also said that Israel violated the ceasefire agreement by flying drones over southern Gaza.

Israel has denied it has violated the truce agreement.

  19. UN says aid had reached north Gaza yesterdaypublished at 16:59 Greenwich Mean Time 25 November 2023

The delay in the release of the hostages appears to be partly over a row about how many aid lorries have entered Gaza as part of the deal - more specifically how many have reached northern Gaza.

UNRWA said on Friday that aid had reached the north of Gaza yesterday for the first time in a month, and the UN said 137 lorries entered Gaza in total yesterday. The Palestinian Red Crescent put the number of lorries crossing Rafah at 196.

Today, Israel's Coordinator of Government Activities in the Territories (COGAT) said the UN was delivering over 50 lorries containing humanitarian aid - food, water, shelter and medical supplies - to the northern Gaza Strip and to shelters that had not yet been evacuated.

Hamas has accused Israel of not following the terms of the ceasefire agreement, and has delayed today's release of hostages because of that.
