  1. 'It felt like needles'published at 13:58 British Summer Time 26 August 2017

Travis Pettis is a reporter with the Corpus Christie newspaper Caller Times. He told the BBC what it was like when the hurricane came ashore.

    Quote Message

It was pretty crazy out there. The winds, I don't know what they topped at but you could barely even walk. It wasn't so much the rain, it was...the wind was blowing so hard that it felt like needles from the rain, the little rain there was, were just like poking you over and over again. That the winds were just blowing so hard that you had to kind of walk backwards so it wouldn't be hitting you in the face.

Hurricane Katrina was a category three storm when it struck New Orleans in 2005

Harvey is the most powerful hurricane to make landfall in the US for 13 years, since its fellow category four storm Charley hit Florida in August 2004.

Across the Atlantic, Charley killed 15 people and destroyed more than $16bn of property (in 2004 currency).

Harvey is only the fourth hurricane in 48 years, external that has been category four or higher on reaching land.

But it is not yet clear whether the damage will be on the scale of category five Andrew, that struck Florida 25 years ago this week, or of Katrina (which was a category three when it devastated New Orleans).

With Texas waking up after Harvey hit, we're starting to get the first images of damage in Corpus Christi and beyond.

  4. The big problem: lots of rainpublished at 13:26 British Summer Time 26 August 2017

While Harvey has slowed down to a category one hurricane, it's not the winds that are causing concern - but rather the rainfall to come.

The latest update from the National Hurricane Center, external, at 13:00BST (7:00 local time), reminds people that Harvey is likely to stall and drop huge amounts of rain over several days.

    Quote Message

Harvey is expected to produce total rain accumulations of 15 to 30 inches and isolated maximum amounts of 40 inches over the middle and upper Texas coast through next Wednesday...Rainfall of this magnitude will cause catastrophic and life-threatening flooding

  13. Harvey - who picked this name?published at 12:43 British Summer Time 26 August 2017

Contrary to rumour, naming of hurricanes has nothing to do with the names of politicians or, even more outlandishly, the people who died in the Titanic. In fact, a list has been in existence since the early 1950s. This BBC article has the details.
