    The brother of the Las Vegas gunman Stephen Paddock, who lives in Orlando, told CNN he is "completely dumbfounded" by the shooting.

    "We can’t understand what happened," Eric Paddock said.

    "He’s not an avid gun guy at all. The fact that he had those kind of weapons is just – where the hell did he get automatic weapons? He has no military background or anything like that.

    "He’s just a guy who lived in a house in Mesquite, drove down and gambled in Las Vegas."

    US President Donald Trump has called the shooting an "act of pure evil".

    Speaking at the White House, he described the emergency response as "miraculous" and said the speed with which the shooter was found saved lives.

    The president expressed his condolences to the victims' families.

    He said: "We are praying for you and we are here for you. God lives in the hearts of those who grieve."

    He added that he will visit Las Vegas on Wednesday.

    The so-called Islamic State group has released a statement through its news agency saying it was behind Sunday night's mass shooting.

    Police had previously said that they did not believe the gunman - Las Vegas local Stephen Paddock - was connected to any group.

    They said they had no idea what Paddock's motive or belief system was and described him as a "distressed individual".

    In a repeat of a trend seen in other recent tragedies, photographs of celebrities and online stars have been shared by people pretending to be concerned about their whereabouts or linking them to the crime.

    This is a photograph of 64-year-old Stephen Paddock who has been named by police as the suspect in Sunday night's gun attack.

    Police said he killed himself in his 32nd floor hotel room before they entered.

    Las Vegas Sheriff Joseph Lombardo described him as a "distraught person intending to cause mass casualties".

    This has been a mass shooting which has shocked Las Vegas - it has stunned this city.

    It is very clear it will be an event that will stun the USA too, a country in which, regrettably, such mass shootings - even if on a lesser scale - are not uncommon.

    As to to why the gunman may have carried out this attack, there is no indication of motive at this stage. He was said to have had a large arsenal, a huge number of weapons in that hotel room, which police finally stormed using explosives.

    As to why he would have set himself up there in that way, to do as he did, it is just so, so difficult to fathom.

    A woman police were searching for earlier, Marilou Danley, was out of the country at the time of the attack, according to police.

    It is thought Stephen Paddock, the dead gunman, used some of her identification documents.

    Police said ten rifles were discovered in the Mandalay Bay hotel room that the gunman was found in.

    Stephen Paddock is the sole suspect in an attack where at least 50 people were killed and hundreds more were injured.

    One local journalist says there has been "no update" on the evacuation plan for those still inside buildings on the strip.

    "We've been here for three hours", he says.

    Many hotels near to where the shooting took place are in lockdown. Earlier, police warned people to avoid the strip until they had confirmed it was safe.

    An updated statement from the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department said that 406 people were taken to local hospitals.

    It added that more than 22,000 were in the crowd when the gunman opened fire.
